Emoticons (or Smileys) are often
used when communicating over the INTERNET to indicate the intention of the
sender. It is not possible to see the wry smile on a persons face when he/she
makes a witty remark about something you have you said or done.
Because of this it is often possible to misinterpret the true meaning behind
someone's remark.
Emoticons are strings of characters which when added to a message will
help to identify the true meaning of a statement. The emoticon is actually
a pictorial representation of a face showing a particular emotion (although
it has now been expanded to show a wide variety if things). These emoticons
were originally designed when it was not possible to show a picture, so in
order to give the effect of a drawing a series of characters are used which
look like a picture when viewed in the correct way.

There are various lists of emoticons available for use. We have chosen some
of more classic and common as well as the newer and more obscure emoticons
for use at the Hardcore Movie Forum. These emoticons will be converted by
our forum software and displayed using a proper image (see the list below).
As there are various lists of emoticons and different people type them in
different ways, we have written our software to allow for the variations which
may be used to create the same common emoticon.
