Ritual intro for the project by the artists
The camera serves as a mirror during the make-up transformation of an ordinary man into imaginary characters, witnessing the changes in body movements and appearance. The ego boosting ritual shapes new facades, which resonate a stronger confidence and power. Rituals are some of the most important expressions of our human existence. Today, they are not only part of religious and secret societies, but also complex, symbolic actions in many areas of our civilisations. As a living form of communication, rituals regulate human coexistence and create the identity of both the individual and society. Gay culture alongside street culture, have lead the way in expressing individuality and self-expression, thereby enabling a more liberal and tolerant society. It has opened up means for communication through the exploration of the emotional, physical and psychological 'self'. Throughout history, gay culture has consistently pushed boundaries and broken rules, which in turn has opened up new forms of expression for all. Ritual explores human physical and mental transformations, which resonate with both comic and darker connotations. Through this body of work, I was able to document a myriad of imaginative characters, giving an insight into a very personal and unique exploration of 'other' personas.
