The Landseer's Namesake

Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (1802-1873) was a famous painter. When he was young he had a big black and white dog named Foam. This is why he preferred the black and white Newfoundland. He would sometimes paint portraits of all black Newfs, and make them black and white in the picture. Queen Victoria had a black and white Newfoundland, and had Sir Edwin Landseer paint the dog's portrait. Before this the black and white Newfs were "undesirable." Because of the queen owning one and the beautiful paintings of them, the black and white Newfoundlands soared in popularity. They later became known by the artist's name, Landseer. To the right is Sir Landseer's portrait, and below are two of his paintings.
