"Grandmother Brown's
Garden"

Grandmother Brown rarely passed up the opportunity to get something for nothing. She was a lover of flowers and her garden was filled with the hardiest and healthiest blooms on the avenue. The reason for their healthy appearance was due to the fertilizer that she applied to them on a regular basis.

This fertilizer was generously donated to her by a coal delivery horse who I swear had an affinity with my grandmother. For, as the horse neared my grandmother's house it would lift its long, matted tail and deposit a healthy supply of manure onto the avenue.

With shovel in hand and oblivious to the traffic, my grandmother would dash out, scoop up what she needed and apply it to her flower bed. Some people said that Grandmother Brown had a "green thumb".I say that what she had was a very obliging delivery horse.
