In Sailor Beware, the first of
the trilogy of comedy plays by Philip King and Falkland
L. Cary, Albert Tufnell is all set to marry Shirley
Hornett when, at the last minute, he has cold feet and
leaves Shirley waiting at the church. The reason for this
is Emma Hornett, Shirley's mother. Albert feels that
Shirley is too much under Emma's thumb and that he and
Shirley will have too much interference in their married
life from Emma. Albert doesn't want to finish up like
Henry Hornett, Shirley's father, whose only pleasure in
life is his ferrets.
Having told Emma exactly how he feels, in Watch it
Sailor! they are now attempting to get to the church
once again.
