The Matchgirls is based on an
actual historical event; the matchgirls' strike of 1888,
which was a significant event in the Labour movement. Prior to this time, the emerging trade unions
were largely in the craft industries, but the matchgirls'
strike was one of the first successful strikes by
unskilled labour.
The strike was not only about pay but
also about working conditions in the Bryant and May
London match factory.
The action takes place in the factory,
in an office of the Freethought Bookshop, and in Annie
Besant's drawing room in the year 1888.
