Brigadoon

The College of Further Education, Wolverton
Thursday 2, Friday 3 & Saturday 4 October 1975

The plot of Brigadoon will sound pleasantly familiar to all students of J M Barrie, and particularly of his play Mary Rose, for like Mary Rose, the heroine of Brigadoon is one of those fay creatures who exist outside time and is, therefore, in a sense immortal, although at a cost. For Lerner and Lowe's village of Brigadoon comes to life for one single day every one hundred years.

The musical tells the story of how two American tourists, Tommy Albright and Jeff Douglas, wandering through the mist and the heather, stumble upon the village on its one-day holiday. They follow the villagers through a day that includes a wedding and a near-disaster when one of the young Scots tries to leave the village.

Tommy falls deeply in love with Fiona, but is told he cannot stay in Brigadoon and she cannot leave, for the rules of the game in Brigadoon are that if any inhabitant of the place decides to leave then the entire village and its population will be obliterated for all time.

The Americans return to New York, where Tommy quarrels with his fiancée and at last goes back to Scotland where, by the power of love, he reawakens the slumbering village long enough to join Fiona.
