SOURCES OF INFORMATION ON THE REGENERATION

This page is presented for people who may not know where to get information regarding the regeneration.  It will also help others establish that the information on the site has a definite source and is not just made up.
Ballymun New Century Development Group is anxious to see the proper regeneration of Ballymun for and on behalf of the community of Ballymun.
We hope this page will allow people to find out for themselves the information we have used.  Not every source is presented here however key sources are given.  Despite these sources there is still an incredible lack of information on detailed plans.

The European Union website presents information on EU directives and regulations which Ireland must abide by.  View the EU legal page at website at
www.europa.eu

The Department of the Environment has it's own website however the government website offers a host of links to other Irish related sites including the Department of the Environment
www.irlgov.ie
Information on Housing can also be obtained under the Freedom Of Information Act from the Department of the Environment.  Write to
Mr. Peter McCann, Housing Construction Section, The Department of the Environment, Customs House, Dublin 1.
'Guidelines to Planning Authorities on Residential Densities' is available along with other selected reports and recommendations.
The IAP for Ballymun also makes interesting reading.

Information is contained in the Craig-Gardner's report on the flats and Muir Associates report on the same.  These can be found in Ballymun Library on Ballymun Road or from Dublin Corporation.  The Moylan report on drainage and sewerage is available from Dublin Corporation.
Dublin Corporations website for general information is
www.dublincorp.ie
Architectural drawings and other design details for the 13 bits of the Phase 1 Scheme in addition to the Gateway Housing Scheme are available from the Planning Department of Dublin Corporation on Wood Quay.

Information contained in BRL's Masterplan and a critical analysis of this plan.  BRL Website presents the Masterplan.  Information contained in BRL's newsletters is also referred to.  Inaddition to these, BRL has produced a brochure called '
Main Street, Development Strategy' (Sept. 1999) and contains the broad plans for the Main Street including Car Park provision
www.brl.ie

The government Stationery Office on Molesworth Street (just off Dawson Street) contains copies of relevant reports on housing, population changes and a variety of documents published by the government.

The Companies Office holds records of Company registrations, directorship, compliance with company law, annual returns and accounts of companies in Ireland. It's website is
www.cro.ie
The companies office does not place company details on-line as a result of  legal action by CFI however CFI has teamed up with Indigo and they have produced Irion, a companies information website. Membership is free however the information is not very detailed see the business section of www.indigo.ie for Irion and other business links.

The Irish Times (www.ireland.com), the Northside People (www.northsidepeople.ie), the Independent and Evening Herald(www.independent.ie), The Sunday Business Post (www.sbpost.ie), and the Sunday Tribune (www.tribune.ie)  are all worth a read. The websites, particularly the Irish Times, hold  archives of previous articles and letters. We don't have website details for The Sun, The Star or The Mirror but they are worth reading too.
Remember, don't believe everything you read in the newspaper!

Information presented at planning appeals and in the rare case, judicial reviews (there's only been one) must be accurate..  These are worth getting your hands on if you are interested in seeing the arguments put forward.

A piece of research was carried out by four people in December 1999 on the Regeneration Process and the consultation that people experienced.  We will try to present this on our site at a future date.  The researchers interviewed many local residents and also BRL.  Their findings are very interesting to say the least.

Local people are of course the best source of information on the human dimension of the regeneration and can tell you their personal experiences of the consultation process.  Many have no choice but to take BRL at their word so we don't know of anyone who had been guaranteed they will get a house suitable to there needs.  Unfortnately, on issues other than housing, most people know little since very little information has been made public on the exact details of the entire plan.

The Community Action Project or CAP as it is better known, has conducted a survey of the views of community groups regarding the regeneration.  CAP found that 82% of community groups were unhappy with how the consultation process operated.  They felt effectively excluded.  Some slight action has  been taken now, nearly 3 years since the plan was announced, regarding their concerns however it is clear that there remains much to do.
