CAR PARKS |
Currently we are surveying the number of car owners in Ballymun. All new housing will have either car park space as part of the garden, or communal road side parking outside houses. BRL so far are providing an average of 1/2 car park spaces per house (Gateway Housing Scheme - 70% of housing units to be private, 30% local authority). This is the minimum required by the Department of the Environment.
In addition to this, as Ballymun is being redeveloped as a town, residential car parking charges could be applied where none exist at present. People in Ballymun should not have to pay to park their cars outside their houses. |

THE MAIN STREET There will be car parking space on the Main Street, although how much is not known. In addition to this, BRL is providing for 1788 car park spaces just off the Main Street. This includes a 650 Car Park and Ride Facility. This will be located between the location of Ceant Tower and Sillogue Road. We recognise the need for a Park and Ride facility however there are problems with this proposal. BRL states that open spaces facilitate anti-social behaviour but what will this Park and Ride facility be at night except a wide open space? Inaddition to this there will be, separately, A 189 space car park, A 148 space car park, A 159 space car park A 90 and a 95 space car park and A 105 spcae car park plus lots of little car parks, All located just off the main street. |

There has been NO consultation about the provision of these car parks. The car parks will consume large amounts of space, be used mostly by people from outside Ballymun, and become a focus of anti-social behaviour at night. But BRL has not consulted the Ballymun community about them. |

We believe that car parking is necessary however we believe that the current plans must be rationalised to provide for a more effective use of the land. Covered car parks should be the norm, rather than the exception. This would provide a more rational use of space and reduce the need for high housing densities so that Ballymun could remain as a suburb Covered car parks could be secured at night so as to reduce the possibility of anti-social behaviour and any charges applying to their use, which would be mostly be people from outside Ballymun using Ballymun as a transit point, could be invested to repay the costs and maintaint he car parks. This would also create a business opportunity for local people.
The 650 space Park and Ride facility should be located at a more northerly point in the estate, closer to the Business and Technology Park. It should be built on more than one level so as to reduce the amount of space it consumes.
We don't want you to look out the windows of your new apartment/flat/residential unit/housing unit or whatever and see a car park, and then wonder why your private space is a balcony and not a garden like you dreamed it would be. Demand to be consulted and to have your views taken on board by BRL. |
