Newaygo County Michigan 8th Brigade 5th Division is compromised of able bodied citizens 18 - 60 years of age from Newaygo County MI.
All members are required to purchase & maintain their own rifles, ammo, uniforms & equipment. Members attend one 4 hour meeting & one 24 hour meeting a month at Level 1 & 2.
4 hour training sessions are conducted the 2nd Thursday of each month 5 - 9 pm. 24 hour training sessions are conducted on the 2nd Saturday of each month, Saturday 1200 - Sunday 1200.

(Members may/can host meeting/training locations to assist the MILITIA in training/developing plans to assist them in defending their properties.)
To qualify Level 1 members are required to have their Level 1 uniforms/equipment, be able to hike 2 miles within 40 minutes in uniform with their equipment, shoot 8 out of 10 shots in a 9 inch target at 100 yards with their personal weapon, demonstrate the ability to field strip & clean their personal weapon.
MILITIA Rifle Company Newaygo County Michigan 8th Brigade 5th Division is not organized as the standard squad - platoon - company size formations due to the smaller number of members than the US Armed Forces. The "2 X 2 = 4" principle allows the MILITIA to expand & decrease in size as necessary at every level & allows team members to move upward with experience while developing team confidence, team skills & maintains team integrity.
2 members = a rifle team
2 rifle teams = a fire team
2 fire teams = a squad/section
2 squads/sections = a platoon
2 rifle platoons = a company
2 rifle companies = a battalion
2 rifle battalions = a regiment
2 rifle regiments within the MILITIA brigade at full infantry strength.
brigade = a county
brigade means "a tactical unit & administrative unit composed of a headquarters with supporting units."
division = a district group of counties within the state
corps = all county brigades & divisions within the state
Members are trained to operate as 2 man rifle teams & 4 man fire teams within their section, rifle platoon, rifle company & brigade.
Rifle Company consists of a 4 man company headquarters section, & 2 rifle platoons each with a two man headquarters section & four 4 man fire teams. Each four man fire team consists of two 2 man rifle teams these are normally family, friends or co-workers who know each other & work well together. This assists in the psychological well being of the team(s) by working with someone you know & trust. Fire teams are normally formed so that each rifle team leader is a family member friend or a coworker as not to arouse suspicion when these members are seen meeting in private or public. This benefits the brigade because members are able to move & meet freely in the community without drawing undue attention to themselves. This also allows for the members to be familiar with the surroundings & members of the community in which they live & protect some of whom have lived in this area their whole lives.
This is similiar to the swiss militia system of civil defense & is reflected in the tradition of the american militia through US history.
Members are taught marksmanship, camouflage, concealment, cover, observation, individual team movement, land navigation, tracking, communication, reporting, first aid, survival camping, patrolling, defensive offensive tactics, mission planning & employment.
