"Warm weather may not arrive along with the first day of spring, but you can still start gardening indoors. For fun, start some marigolds in an empty egg carton (you can transplant them outdoors later).

Fill the egg cups with moist potting soil and plant a few seeds about 1/4 inch deep in each one. Cover with plastic wrap and set in a warm place.

Mist the soil with water daily. At the first sight of sprouts (about 7 to 14 days), remove the plastic and set the seedlings by a window where they'll get at least a few hours of sunlight every day.

Once the seedling have two pairs of leaves, transplant them into small pots or yogurt containers; with three pairs or more, they're ready to move outdoors."
