I'm going to talk about hacker ethics.

Well I'll start off by saying how pissed off I'm getting and others are about "crackers" giving us a bad name. You have probably read about 100 articles about this subject before, but what the hell, lets make it 101.

Well, you probably see me on IRC saying, "1 0wn j00" or something of that nature so to put it, but like I'm joking around, so are alot of other hackers, just messing around with their mates. But some hackers are not. This is what worries me. Hackers are not like they used to be. I mean, we were all newbies at one time. I know they are annoying at times, but imagine you at their keyboard. Trying to find out how you spoofed (many people ask me), how you hacked that and so on. Why not help them, or at least lead them in the write direction, I usually tell them some things to netsearch or some sites of interest.

People that come on IRC and ask how to hack, thinking there is a program to do it for them, piss me off. These people will never be hackers. These are the people who have just watched films like, 'The Net' and 'Hackers'.

People that root something, then think "they are the world" piss me off. That might of just been a once off... and I bet you they will be saying to their friends they are going to hack a government site next.

I hang out on IRC, the Undernet and I see many people coming into hacking channels asking how to get access to other people's machines, mostly their friends. They only wanting to do this to damage it as you can tell, they go on about how can they upload a virus to it too, etc. These people are crackers, or will be one day. These are the people that piss me off and give Hackers a bad name. That's totally wrong, where's all the exploring gone? Down the drain I tell you.

News papers stereotype us, saying "hackers" broke into a system and deleted files or crashed the entire network. They are crackers, someone should correct them. I hope any people to do with the media reading this will try to remember this next time you are writing a hacker article in the future, we would be very greatful.

This sterotype is showing. I own #HackTech on Undernet, as you may know and EVERY day you will see some one ask about BO (Cult of the Dead Cow's) remote "lame" (some may say) program. I have never used this and do not wish to as it just shows the lamest that just any user can "point and click" so to put it and 90% of the time people want to use it for destruction, why else would it have reboot options, etc? (so I have read). Programs like these give us a bad name, I bet you that in any news paper they print about BO, or any media site they will use the term "hackers". People think crackers are people who crack passwords, they are not, they destroy machines. Hackers explore, find out more, for their knowledge.

As RLoxley said in his editorial in the last issue and I will quote, '...for the thrill of the chase, the rush of the kill, and the freedom of knowledge gained from their "holy quest"'.

People do not understand, hackers hack, not virii, not carding, not warez (well not much) and certainly not damage to a computer. A computer is a hackers best friend (most of the time when it does what he/she wants). I do not want you to get the impression all hackers are male, they are not. I have spoken to some female hackers out there, which know their stuff, and are very good hackers. They seem to follow the ethics for some reason, maybe its in their feminine blood, maybe not...

If a hacker does mess a computer up... delibratley, then he/she should not have the title cracker, therefore he/she is lower, he is a cracker. Changing webpages is still lame, unless you have an important message which I will talk about now. If you back up the old webpage for the sysadmin, tell him/her you have done so and notify him of his/her security fault and patch it for him/her or tell him/her how to, then this still follows the hacker ethics, thus not lame and not a cracker.

I personally think that hackers come out with too much crap in their hacks on machines and changes their webpages. I mean, as I said earlier, people say "1 0wn j00" or something to that type, which is what is called an "elite language". This hacker may be mucking about with his friends or as a joke... but how does the sysadmin and others know that you are not mucking about?

People that do not know you personally (I mean like know your personality) will not know. They get a sterotype image of hackers then, and a sysadmin of someone that has only come in contact with that one hacker may sterotype it and think all hackers are like that.

I think if you hack a webpage (ie; rooting a machine and editoring the httpd section) then you should put a message out. If you do not have an important message, leave it, do not do any damage, just explore the system and leave a backdoor or something until you might have a message to be heard. Hacking is not all about being heard but if you do have a message to get out then this is a good way too.

People will take no notice if you just put aload of "elite typing characters" in the hack as people have seen it all the time and won't think again and won't give a shit. Where as the sysadmin or person that has came in contact with a hacker and saw them write in "elite language" and on this hack they show they can actually speak English and have a message to get out, it will get noticed. They will think to them selfs... this "hacker" (a cracker but they do not know the difference) is different, maybe they're not all out there trying to destroy machines and cause choas. Thus they will understand what a "cracker" and a "hacker" is.

You think about it and I'll leave you with my favourite part from "The Hacker's Mainifesto".This is our world now... the world of the electron and the switch, thebeauty of
the baud. We make use of a service already existing withoutpaying for what
could be dirt-cheap if it wasn't run by profiteeringgluttons, and you call us
criminals. We explore... and you call uscriminals. We seek after knowledge...
and you call us criminals. Weexist without skin color, without nationality,
without religious bias...and you call us criminals. You build atomic bombs, you
wage wars, youmurder, cheat, and lie to us and try to make us believe it's for
ourown good, yet we're the criminals. Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that
of curiosity. My crime isthat of judging people by what they say and think, not
what they look like.My crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will
neverforgive me for. I am a hacker, and this is my manifesto. You may stopthis
individual, but you can't stop us all... after all, we're all alike.

Take care, until next time... (Jerry Springer bye bye)

    Laters,

    c0redump
