I'll probally yelled at by every horror fan that reads this review. *takes a deep breath* I didn't "love" Nightmare on Elm Street. *exhales* I thought it was OK.. but nothing that I would make a fan site over, or buy a halloween mask over.. For it's time it was a really original movie, I'm not sure if Wes Craven knew that this was going to spawn countless merchandise ranging from Action figures, to toy "Freddy" gloves, to books, to a televison series. Or to the six other movies it spawned. This movie has a really dark feel to it. He's always in the shadows, and all the deaths are rather bland ( compared to later films in the series ) . In later installments though, Freddy turns out to be a wisecracking potty mouth. More funny than scary.
Nancy has dreams, bad dreams.. So does the rest of the twenty something actors, playing sixteen year olds that live on Elm street.
Things heat up when Nancy's friend dies and the only witness is her biker wannabe boyfriend. He runs from the scene, in fear, or stupidity, or something, I don't know. He gets caught by the police and put in jail. He later describes how his girlfriend was killed ( A pretty good FX sequence actually ) and Nancy begins her Obsession with "Fred Krueger". She finds out he was a child killer who was burned alive in his boiler room hideout by the parents of Elm street, and now he's back, entering people's dreams, to get revenge. To prevent this Nancy tries, coffee, pills, watching TV.. etc.. to stay awake. Each time she fails.
The deaths in this movie were pretty good.. My personal favorite bing Nancy's friend who gets lifted up from the bed, sliced open, spun around, then smacked up against the ceiling.. Johny Depp's character also has a pretty cool death, with him being sucked into his bed, and then a guyser of blood shooting up from it.
Overall I liked the movie. I like Freddy as he is "Dream Warriors" and up though. But if you like the DARK freddy better, I still think you should try part two "Freddy's Revenge" after you watch this one of course. ( ^__^ )
