Detective Comics #734 - Mark of Cain: 2 (No Man’s Land)
July, 1999.

Price: $1.99 US, $3.25 CAN
Synopsis: This is the second part of the 2-part story begun
in Batman #567. The comic opens with Batman observing a building
Commissioner Gordon is in. Cain arrives to kill Gordon, but Cassandra (Batgirl
without costume) crashes out the window and tackles him. Cassandra cries
when she sees her father. They begin to fall down the building, but Batman
saves them, and Cassandra blacks out. Later on, she wakes up in a graveyard.
Batman questions her and discovers that she only speaks the language of
violence. Cassandra realizes that Batman was also a student of Cain, and
the comic goes through a sequence where Batman and Cassandra fight with
flashbacks from the past when they were training with Cain. Finally, Batman
gets Cassandra in a fatal move, but doesn’t kill her. He remembers when
Cain taught him that move, and she remembers when she used that move to
kill a mob leader. Batman has proven to Cassandra that he can stop Two-Face.
Later, Cain is going to kill Gordon with a sniper gun, but Batman gets
in the way. As the two men fight it out, Cassandra, in a burglar-type costume,
takes care of Two-Face. When it seems that the fight between Batman and
Cain is almost over, Cassandra shows up and stops them. Cain wants to hug
her, but she rejects him. Batman is happy with her. At the conclusion of
the comic, Oracle gives Cassandra a picture of her as the original Batgirl.
