Agent of the Bat #61 (No Man’s Land)
February, 2000.
Dennis O’Neil, Roger Robinson, and James Pascoe
Price: $2.25 US, $3.50 CAN
Synopsis: This touching issue begins with a discussion in Oracle’s
apartment between Barbara, Batman, Commissioner Gordon, and some blonde
about the Joker kidnapping babies. Outside, Jean Paul sees a model of Jesus’
birth, which he does not know about. We find out more about Jean Paul’s
horrible childhood as Dr. Thompkins tries to explain the model as simply
as she can. Batgirl arrives and hands Jean Paul a note. As they head off
to Oracle’s apartment, Jean Paul talks to Batgirl about their similarities,
and Batgirl ends up revealing her face to him. At Oracle’s apartment, Barbara
tells them to go to Camp Lex to look for the kidnapped babies. She then
gives them Christmas presents. Back outside, Batgirl’s present to Jean
Paul is a dance. He doesn’t know what to give her in return. At Camp Lex,
they beat up some guards and find a Christmas tree decorated with baby
dolls. Azrael touches one and it explodes. He is just quick enough to save
Batgirl and a female guard. After the explosion, Jean Paul finds something
in the snow. At Dr. Thompkins’ hospital, we find a badly burned Jean Paul.
Dr. Thompkins gives him an angel Christmas tree ornament he had been holding
on to when he was removed from the scene of the explosion, and it becomes
his gift to Batgirl.
