Please tell us a bit about the band’s …
Formed in 1998 under the name VILE by Bimo and the gank. After a few line-up
changes, Bimo Morbid (guitar), Pandi Ghebes (drum) and Edwin Haikal (bass)
recorded “Systematic Terror Decimation” debut cassette and released by Dementia
Records in 1999. Nino Aspitanta of Trauma helps the vocal parts on this
recording. Fahmi Haraif joined the band in early 2000 and we played at numerous
gigs during the year 2000. In early 2001, Andyan Gorust of Siksakubur joined the
band to replace Pandi Ghebes. With this line-up, we recorded 3 song promo for
record labels purpose. In mid 2001, Fahmi got fired and replaced by Nino
Aspiranta and then we re-recorded 7 previous songs from VILE’s debut cassette
plus 3 new songs for Edelweiss Productions. This re-release cassette version has
heavier sound and better packaging. CD version of this full length album was
released by From Beyond Productions (sublabel of Dutch’s Displeased Records) in
March 2002. A month later, Edwin decided to retire due to hi
s occupation. After that, there’s no activity in the band until now. Nino and
Andyan returns to their own main bands.
You guys were well known as VILE in the past, Why did you change the name
into ABSOLUTE DEFIANCE ?
As you know, there’s another VILE in California, USA. Roman of From
Beyond/Displeased confirmed to USA’s VILE and Relapse Records (who wants to
release USA’s VILE 2nd album) about his purpose to release Indonesian VILE
internationally concerning to the similar name. Then Relapse said, “Go ahead, we
don’t mind if you want to release Indonesian VILE, as a matter of fact, USA’s
VILE are lazy asses, they haven’t recorded their 2nd album material until now,
so we will dumb them out!”. But it has a different story with USA’s VILE, Colin
Davis (American VILE’s guitarist) who said, “They have to change their
(Indonesian VILE) name otherwise they will get a serious trouble in the future.
Our name has been registered in International copyrights since 1996 as our
lawyer told us”. Roman suggests us to change our name, and we were so confused
at that time. We thought that there were so many bands which has the same name
such as; DISGORGE (US-Mexico-Holland), PROPHECY (US-Poland), TRAUMA (In
donesia-Poland), BETRAYER (Indonesia-Israel), CENOTAPH (Turkey-Mexico-France),
DIES IRAE (Poland-Mexico) and tons more! We really didn’t know about USA’s VILE
existence when we started in 1998. I pick VILE as our moniker because it has a
particular meaning in our musical and lyrical concept. I took the word from
CANNIBAL CORPSE’s 5th album title. Finally, we decided to change VILE into
ABSOLUTE DEFIANCE, because we have sickened and bored enough to deal with this
kinda shitty problem. And we thought, this was our international debut album,
most of the people will recognize us as ABSOLUTE DEFIANCE, we’re not afraid if
we have to back to zero. We choose ABSOLUTE DEFIANCE, because it has a lot more
meaningful and representative towards our concept. I have a wider explanation
about this.
The “Systematic Terror Decimation” was released by FROM BEYOND Records, can you
tell us about that label and how did you made the deal with’em ? Is it contains
all VILE’s previous songs…
From Beyond Productions is a Zaandam, Holland based sublabel of Displeased
Records managed by one of Displeased staff, Roman Buschman, so it has the same
office. Roman shows his interest to our “Systematic Terror Decimation” (10 song
Edelweiss cassette consists of 7 previous songs + 3 new songs), he emailed me
after he received and listened to our 3 song promo 2001 we have sent to
Displeased. He wants to release “STD” plus 3 song promo as bonus tracks under
his label which provided by Displeased, they had a good offer and we had a final
deal and the rest is history… All materials has been remixed and remastered.
You seems have the motto ‘No More Crime Against Humanity” what is that all
about ?
Our lyrics dealt with many kind of crimes against humanity, you know, military
atrocities such sick as; voluntary disappearances, genocides, massacres,
mass-rapes, it causes a horrendous painful suffering of innocent people, victims
of depraved tyrannical authority suppression. So we say fuck off and die to all
fascist and imperialist shitheads for all of their sins, making the world
sicker, there’s a big price they have to pay, they must die 1000 times more
painfully than their victims.
How do you describe your music ? and what bands influencing you ? (old
school and new school). What bands that you really want to do their cover
songs ? why ?
It’s simple, death metal. But we like playing in fast temp and arrange the songs
brutally. My influences came from Suffocation, Dying Fetus, Pyrexia and more,
the list will never end! Actually I’m listening to all kind of music, be it
punkrock, old school/new school hardcore, heavy metal, thrash metal, black
metal, grindcore, even pop, jazz, alternative rock and kinda softer stuff! I’m
not closing myself towards reality. But only if it has a quality! Lately, I
oftenly tuned in to metalcore stuff like; Poison The Well, Shadows Fall,
Caliban, etc. The only song that I really wanted to do the cover version is
“Mbah Dukun” from ALAM!…hehehehehehehehe…!!!!!!! You wanna know why? Because
ALAM rules!…hehehehehehehehe…!!!!!! He mixed dangdut and rock perfectly, I mean,
perfectly WORST!!!!!!!….hehehehe…..!!!!!
There are a lot of bands who try to show the people that they’re the most
brutal band, trying to be the fastest band, What do you comment about this
? Do you try to be the most brutal band on earth ? Do you think the death
metal music skill is some kind of competition ?
Good question. Yeah, I have the same feeling as you are, there are many
so-called brutal death bands are trying to be the fastest or the sickest or
whatsoever within our lovely local scene. I think there’s some kind of
stereotype circulating in the scene. Most of them thinks that, “if it’s not
brutal, it’s not good or cool, they’re afraid if they will not be
well-recognized in the scene. There’s a misunderstanding of definition towards
“brutal” in death metal/grindcore music. It’s a shame that they’re always stick
to this way of thinking. I think “brutal” is not just playing fast by hyper
blasting beats/drums or pig snoring guttural growls, it has not to be this way.
“Brutal” atmospheres can be reached by arrangement, it depends on how you wirte
the composition. If you think “brutal” is playing as fast as possible only, your
music becomes so fucking monotonous!!! Just listen to SUFFOCATION’s “Jesus
Wept”, listen it seriously, are there any hyper blasting drums in this song? The
re aren’t, but the music is so fucking brutal!!!!!!!!!! SUFFOCATION are godz!!!
Is there a big death metal scene in your town ? Could you name a few the
bands that you think are cool to check out ? Why do you like these bands ?
Yeah, but not so big either, keep your eyes open to these sick bastards:
SIKSAKUBUR, FUNERAL INCEPTION, JASAD, FORGOTTEN, FLESH FILTH, SINUSITIS,
AUTHORITY, STRAIGHT OUT, INNER BEAUTY, TROOPS OF BRUTALITY and tons more!
There’s no enough space to write all of them! I think their music is good,
that’s it.
What do you guys do beside the band ? job ? school ?
Andyan is still study at National University (UNAS), I have finished my one year
college at Interstudi (graphic design) and don’t have a certain job yet.

“ POSEURS “, “ TRENDY METAL “.
DEATH METAL = one step ahead heavier, sicker, more extreme and more brutal form
of thrash metal evolution.
POSEURS = closed minded and foolish people who doesn’t have anything as a clue
of their life style. If other people thinks something is cool, they would do the
same thing. If others thinks it’s bad, they think so too, and so on. Especially
when they have to deal with trend. However, we have to help these poseurs out by
giving them enough information. We’re wrong if we’re just underestimating them,
I’m pretty sure that every person had ever stamped on this phase, it takes a lot
of time to grow up, they need a lot to learn until they’ve realized and knowing
what’s right and wrong. So what are you waiting for? LET’S FIGHT THE
IGNORANCE!!!
TRENDY METAL = a hyper popular metal music which has been over-published by
mainstream medias in order to achieve a bigger audience/listener or fans.
Usually there’s some kind of conspiracy between a major record company and mass
media (especially MTV!). Today’s trendy metal music is being labeled as NU-METAL
or whatsoever. I totally disrespect to all metal claiming bands whose acting
like rockstar or celebrity and exploiting this genre into commercial oriented
things, the perfect example is LIMB SHITDICK, death to these false metal heads!
Tell us about your most sickest gig ?
The sickest gig we’ve ever done was when we played at Semarang’s Extreme Fest.
The crowds went crazy, they were slamming n’ banging down and up on the stage!
The coolest support we’ve ever received.
What do you think of the Nu Metal genre nowadays ? Bands like Soulfly,
Slipknot, POD, ill Nino, Static X, etc, what do you think about’em ? Do you
consider’em as metal ?

SLIPKNOT = I like Corey’s pissed off type of growl.
POD = White metal must go to the church not going to the show! ( Agree ! - Ed. )
ILL NINO = They are kickin’ in the ass!( Disagree ! - Ed. )

Well, musically, of course, undeniably, they play metal (downtuned guitar
distortions, energetic beats), I just can’t accept to all opportunistic false
metal heads whose music became metal when metal is on the top. How can we know
LINKIN PARK, KORN or those aforementioned bands were truly into metal in the
first place? Let’s see about 1-2 years later, are they still playing this style
even though NU-METAL is no longer trendy? Only time will tell… I think we also
have to look at the other people behind this trendy metal screen besides the
band themselves. They are just sticking on their ideology, capitalism,
multinational corporations that kills the weak/poor. They’re always exploiting
the mainstream phenomena for their own profits. Let’s just fuck them off,
because we’re living in a different scene, we’re extreme metal underground who
always pissing in the mainstream!

Any plans for the near future ?
I will reactivate the band with a new line-up and write a new song. Our new
material will have a different music direction. Not as brutal and fast as the
previous one does, it’s a lot more moshable and groovier, and more emotional
anger on the vocals, but still heavy as fuck death metal though!
