Chaplin's Wartime Films

Charlie Chaplin was one of the most acclaimed artists of his time. The start of the Great War also marked the height of his career, and it was during this period that he produced his most famous films. Chaplin had signed to Keystone in May 1913, a studio renowned for it’s innovation and high turnout. The chronology of Chaplins films, all of which ran for a staggering 15-20 minutes, shows how prolific he was during the war, sometimes producing as many as thirty five films in one year.

The stills below show incidents from some of Chaplin’s films. As the pictures demonstrate, the quality of the film footage was often poor, and troops would also have been plagued by reels breaking, hairs in the gate and adverse weather conditions created by the makeshift nature of the cinemas the films were shown in.

I would like to thank Rachel Devine for the first six stills, which have been taken from her excellent site on the works of Charlie Chaplin. To visit her site, click here.
