I tried to summurize my perspective and the hell I went through. Well, not necessarily hell, but implementing SolMan is not a picnic especially if you do not know much about CCMS architecture, e-mail set-up tricks and auto-reaction methods. You can master it by yourself in a couple of weeks but the following may help to speed you up. Use it at your own risk. This is only my way of implementing it.
Here is the path I followed:
1- Install Solution Manager
2- Install latest ST-PI and ST-A/PI patches to Solution Manager and Satellite Systems
3- Integrate Satellite Systems :Configure CCMSPING and CCMS Agents for
- SAP R/3 Systems
- Systems > = 4.6
- Systems < 4.6
- NonSAP Oracle Databases
- Non-SAP SQL Databasees
4- Set up Logfile & Process Monitoring
- EP
- Live Cache
5- Setup e-mail.
6- Setup alert thresholds and auto-reaction methods
7 -Set up Earlywatch and Service Level Reports
