I quitted smoking on September 9th, 2001 with the help of www.quitnet.org
I just want to share with you what helped me to quit.

During the preperation to quitting, make a list for each item;
- why you want to live longer,
- why you need to live healtier,
- what you have missed in your life since you smoke.

Also
- realize how smoking destroys you day by day,
- realize that your are killing yourself.

After quitting, cravings will start hitting you. No matter how appealing atmosphere you are in, do not smoke, just breath deeply as if you are smoking and keep reminding yourself every item in that list. Cravings will  go away in a few minutes.

These two steps helped me a lot. I still have these cravings and I know I will always have. I know if I cannot control myself, I will get back to those days waking up coughing with a muddy mouth, tight chest, ....

Smoking kills you! Quit while you can!
