Everyone should know the safety rules for working in the kitchen. Even if you are too young to cook, you can get burned by someone who is cooking or cause the person cooking to get burned. The list below shows a few rules that everyone should follow, and each family should make up their own safety rules that need to be followed in their home to add to these.

1. Young people should stay at least 3 feet away from the stove when someone is cooking. This will keep you and the person cooking safe. You wont get burned and they wont trip over you.

2. Pay attention to the person cooking; if they are moving a hot pan from the stove to the sink or counter, be sure you are no in the way. They might accidentally bump you with the hot pan or spill hot food on you.

3. Dont lay towels, papers, or other things that can burn close to the stove. Anything that can catch fire should be far away from the stove.

4. Be sure that whoever is touching hot pans uses oven mitts or pot holders.

5. Pans on the front of the stove should have their handles pointed towards the back of the stove, and pans on the back of the stove should have their handles pointed towards the center of the stove.

6. If someone gets burned, use cool water to soothe it for a few minutes. If the water doesnt seem to help, go see a doctor.

7. Be careful when using microwaves to cook. Food cooks much faster in a microwave, and it can get very hot very quickly. Always look for steam coming off the food; steam may burn you badly.  Dont try to eat food straight out of the microwave; stir it to spread the heat through the food and let it cool a little before eating.

Always remember that safety comes first!!
