It is solid oak. The top tier is made of 6 pieces of oak dove tailed together & the 2nd tier has 5 pieces. All of the carvings appear to be hand carved & are repeated on each side. The black spots on the table a probably spilled ink from either an inkwell or pen. The 2nd tier also has a broken corner where the screw attaches it to the leg, needs repaired. Even so, it is quite sturdy. I believe the condition is quite nice for a well used table. I love it!
