Es handelt sich hier um den Mitschnitt des Flammenzauber-Konzertes am 20. März 2004 auf der Wasserburg in Heldrungen, Thüringen. Changes in der Besetzung Robert N. Taylor und Nicholas Tesluk. Als Gastmusiker Markus Wolff/Waldteufel sowie B'eirth/In Gowan Ring. 17 Lieder, ca. 70 Minuten, einige bisher noch unbekannte Stücke. Robert und Nicholas waren von Anfang an von der Idee begeistert, dieses schöne Konzert auf einem Tonträger zu verewigen und haben uns während der Produktion in traumhafter Art und Weise unterstützt: Robert und Nicholas stellten für die Gestaltung des vierfarbigen Klappcovers (auf stabilem 300 g Karton) ihre Bilder zur Verfügung, und Nicholas übernahm die kompletten grafischen Arbeiten. Im Innenteil des Covers sind mit einem Bild von Nicholas im Hintergrund alle Texte zu den Liedern abgedruckt. Das Vinyl selbst ist in roter Farbe (ein Wunsch von Robert). Von Anfang an waren beide Künstler von der Idee begeistert, dieses großartige Konzert denen zugänglich zu machen, die nicht dabei sein konnten, aber auch denen, die sich dieses Ereignis immer wieder gerne vor Augen (bzw. Ohren) führen möchten.

CHANGES präsentieren hier natürlich Liedgut der allseits bekannten „Fire Of Life“-LP, aber auch einiges an bisher Unveröffentlichtem sowie Rares wie z.B. „Icarus“ (B-Seite der vergriffenen „Fire Of Life-7“) und „Legends“ von der gleichnamigen CD. Das Konzert endet mit der ergreifenden Version von „Waiting For The Fall“. Die Musiker stehen in ständiger Interaktion mit dem Publikum. In seinen Anmerkungen sagt Robert, dass es für einen Amerikaner etwas Besonderes ist, in einem Original-Schloß aufzutreten (und nicht den Nachbauten aus Disneyland) und vor einem jungen Publikum zu spielen, das alle Lieder kennt (die teilweise ja schon Ende der Sechziger entstanden). CHANGES beweisen hier wieder einmal, dass sie die wahren Vertreter der apokalyptischen Folklore sind, und ich bin sehr stolz darauf, gemeinsam mit ihnen diese Platte veröffentlichen zu können.

Those who missed the concert given by this folk duo/band on the last 20th March for the fourth edition of the Flammenzauber Festival on the Wasserburg in Heldrungen, have here a second chance to listen to this great performance... and those lucky enough to have attended this festival should love to immerse themselves again into the particular atmosphere created by these beautiful apocalyptic folk ballads...

Starting with the classic 'Fire Of Life', Robert N. Taylor and Nicholas Tesluk pass in review a good part of Changes repertory... form the 'Fire Of Life' album ('Memorabilia', 'Bleeding Out Your Feelings Evermore' and in particular the beautiful lost love song 'Sweet Eve' opened and closed by a eerie flute...) to the 10" split 'Time' (the excellent lively version of 'Summer' with a stunning final by Nicholas Tesluk on guitar and 'Song Of Pan', a beautiful ballad played with guitar, flute, tambourine and vocals).

It is also a pleasant surprise to hear live some rare or more unknown songs like 'Aphrodite' form the 'Zu Neuen Ufern In Alter Frische' compilation as well as 'Icarus' (the bi-side of the 'Fire Of Life' 7") for which I have, for personal reasons, a particular affection. 'Eddic', the third part of 'Legends' is also played with the help of B'eirth (In Gowan Ring).

They also gratify the audience with a few unreleased songs at that time... 'Orphan In the Storm', a short, simple and very touching song about Edgar Allan Poe, accompanied by the guitar and vocals and standing already like a classic... a medley of two sea shanties 'Embarkation/Sailor's Song', a beautiful erotic song titled 'Somewhere In the Night' and 'Never So True' that sounds unfamiliar to me.

The duo was joined on stage by Markus Wolff (Waldteufel) on percussions for 'Twilight Of the West' whose lyrics, although they are 30 years old, still have a meaning today. The concert ended in the best manner with a very inspired interpretation of 'Waiting For The Fall', Robert N. Taylor explaining to the audience the origins of this song...

All in all, the general impression is that all the songs gain in intensity and authenticity due to the duo's talent to give life to a story or a poem and the musicianship, of course. Sad songs sound even sadder ('The saddest thing') and time seems to have no hold on these beautiful love songs.

The songs are punctuated here and there by a few comments from both musicians and the communion and the interaction with the audience is definitely perceptible (enthusiastic applause and shouts from people as proof).

In phase with Robert N. Taylor's desiderata, the colour of the two vinyls is ruby red. Each word of the title is written on each side of the records, with the same beautiful drawn typography used for the whole artwork. All the lyrics also feature on the inner covers of the gatefold together with a touching text written by Robert N. Taylor about what they felt when playing in a castle in Europe, amongst a friendly audience.

This 70 minute-long double LP has just been released by the German label Neue Ästhetik as a limited edition of 300 copies. Graphics and inner painting from Robert N. Taylor and Nicholas Tesluk (with that 60's touch), develop a familiar Changes aesthetic... that naturally fits the songs...

I can only praise Axel Meese (the person behind Neue Ästhetik) for his work in production, mastering and recording, and also for having opted for this format and allow unfashionable and timeless Changes songs to carry on being played ever one...

It may sound a bit unusual to read such an enthusiastic opinion about a live recording but this is really a priceless document that I highly recommend."

Aber auch oder erst recht für den einen oder anderen, der leider nicht dort sein konnte, mag dieses Dokument vielleicht ein willkommener kleiner Trost bzw. Ersatz sein. Dem jungen Label Neue Ästhetik aus Bremen verdanken wir es, ausgiebig Changes auf 4 Seiten weinrotem Vinyl in musikalischer Bestform, mit kleinen Anekdoten Robert  Taylors zwischendurch, Gastmusikern wie Markus Wolff/Waldteufel an der Trommel oder B'Eirth/In Gowan Ring - Flöte, mit einem Querschnitt ihres Schaffens hören zu können. Nicholas und Robert klingen frischer denn je, die Stücke der legendären 'Fire Of Life' haben nichts von ihrer Lebendigkeit und Ursprünglichkeit eingebüßt. Ganz im Gegenteil, mitunter wird's sogar noch wilder, klangvoller und mit dem Charme der Live-Aufnahme so stimmungsintensiv, wie es nur eine Gruppe dieses Formats, dieser Herkunft und dieses Alters vermitteln kann. Und so ist es jedesmal ein kleines privates Revival der sechziger und siebziger Jahre, zelebriert dereinst auf und vor der Bühne in Heldrungen und nun im eigenen Wohnzimmer, wenn man sich diese Dosis originalen Folks gibt.

Unter den Liedern, die fast nur mit 12-String Akustikgitarre und im unverwechselbaren Gesangsduett vorgetragen werden, befinden sich so wunderbare Stücke wie natürlich 'Fire Of Life', der Opener des Konzertes, mein persönlicher Liebling 'The Saddest Thing', 'Legends' oder das laut vernehmbar vom Publikum applaudierte 'Waiting For The Fall' als Zugabe.

Der Sound ist für eine Platte dieser Art völlig in Ordnung und gut. Das Artwork wurde von Nicholas Tesluk persönlich entworfen, in den unverwechselbaren Farben, mit allen Texten sowie einem persönlichen Vorwort von Robert Taylor.

Lob für dieses kleine historische Dokument gebührt allein schon dem Umstand, daß das aufgenommene Material nicht womöglich, wie auch schon erlebt, illegal mitgeschnitten, irgendwo im privaten Regal verschimmelt, sondern verdientermaßen sowohl für die Musiker, das Publikum und die Fans als auch für das Label und die Veranstalter des Konzertes unter die Zuhörer gebracht wurde.

Bleibt zu sagen: 'Yes, Heroes took their stand!'"

This is a beautiful new release by the oft-misunderstood band Changes. Derided for a "political stance" that is simply a critique of the decline of Western Civilization, Changes are dogged by detractors and paranoid self-appointed janitors of our so-called "free" society. The oddity here is that after scouring the songs and lyrics of Changes, I find nothing more or less critical of our society than say, the far-left rap/industrial group Consolidated.
