SP0256 Speech Processor:
The  General Instruments SP0256 Speech Processor is an IC that can make
any of the speach sounds in the English language. Though there are many other speech processor chips out there, it was the one i had on hand so i decided to use
it . The SP0256 does not have a memory for external use so i added one as can be seen in the schematic below.
It is recommended by General Instruments to run this chip from a computer
with a simple Basic program via a parallel port such as a one for a printer. But
this circuit does not require the use of a computer the BCD code is manually
installed into a 6116 2K x 8 SRAM via a simple 16 pin DIP Switch (8 switches).
Without this memory IC  the SP0256 would have to be permanently connected
to a computer if it is going to do any thing, so the addition of a memory IC is of
great value.
Circuit Operation:
Though this circuit uses DIP switches to manually input the BCD code, it is quite
easy to do . The chosen code must of course be written down on paper and then
the DIP switches (8 of them) used to input this code into memory one byte at a
time. Every time a byte is set up on the DIP switches the R/W push-button
(Read/Write) must be depressed to enter it into the 6116 SRAM via its Data
pins ( 9,10,11,13,14,15). It must also be noticed that a different address has
to be opened for each data entry, this is accmplished by the BCD counters.
This is not shown in the schematic below for size , check back to schematic
scrapbook under SRAM Programmer and contact bounce suppressor circuits.
