File Sharing

There are around ten main file sharing programs. These are the top six.

Top 6 P2P million downloads/week:

  1. Kazaa 2,64
  2. Imesh 0,39
  3. Morpheus 0,18
  4. eMule/Edonkey 0,16
  5. Bittorrent 0,11
  6. Limewire 0,06

This shows just how popular file sharing has become over the past five or so years. Since the start of Napster, there has been many imitations. These are often thought of as being better too, with improved sharing times, and more options.

That's one big sharing

In the long long ago there was a file sharing operation called Napster. Napster allowed people to sample more music, which ultimately lead to more people buying CDs. At one stage Napster had around 20 million people using their system. What Napster did is simply facilitate communication among people interested in music. Napster thought that their system delivered music that "feels" free to the consumers.

Librarians schooled Napster in what could now be called the instruments of piracySource. The library was the first place that was seen to use a photocopy machine and a tape recorder. No one called them pirates they were thought of as scholars. According to Potter, committee chairman Orrin Hatch said that if record companies and music publishers don't reasonably license their music and make it available in various file formats, legislation would be in force with companies to license their music to all comers.

Hilary Rosen, the president of the Recording Industry Association of America, was a witness when it came time to question her regarding the fair use clause, which has been at the center of both the MP3.com and Napster defense in their respective lawsuits against the recording industry. She refused to answer, but did reply with "leading me down the Napster path."

What is file sharing?

File sharing is the process of sharing files over the Internet. A completely competent peer-to-peer file sharing service. People with equal rights. This means that individual users connect to each other directly, without need for a central point of management. All people with KaZaA media desktop installed on their computer. Can interact with each other and share each others files. It can supports multi-source downloads, which means that you can transfer things like: images, videos, software, music (MP3s), and documents of any kind.

The most popular file sharing system now days is KaZaA. It allows all these functions and more. For some reason KaZaA has been allowed to carry on sharing files along with Imesh, Morpheus, eMule/Edonkey, Bittorrent and Limewire to name a few.

Overall sharing files is bad for the consumers, and producers. It creates less profit for the owners of the files themselves.
