SCIENCE FICTION

CORDWAINER SMITH -The Planet Buyer(also titled NORSTRILIA) -The Undermen -Space Lords -The Instrumentality of Mankind -Search For the Three Worlds ( The Adventures of Casher O'Neill) Several "BEST OF CORDWAINER SMITH" collections. Cordwainer Smith was the Nom-de-Plume of Paul M. Linebarger. Written from the 40's to the late 60's almost all of his work is in the form of short stories. They are tiny windows into a huge, wonderful, and occasionally terrifying future history. In some ways he reminds me of Jules Verne, things are just happening even faster than he thought they would. He had a way of using words that seems strange, but he was trying to describe things that we haven't even come up with the thoughts for yet, let alone the words and patterns. Nom de Plume of Paul Linebarger This is NOT (E.E."Doc" Smith).
DOUGLAS ADAMS The Hitchhiker's Trilogy -The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy -The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe -Life, The Universe And Everything -So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish That's right folks, a trilogy according to Douglas Adams -The Long Dark Tea-Time Of The Soul -Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency
ROGER ZELAZNY -Lord Of Light -Creatures of Light and Darkness -Doorways In The Sand (or CHARLES FORT NEVER MENTIONED WOMBATS) -A Night In The Lonesome October -Dilvish The Damned -Jack of Shadows The Amber Series -Nine Princes in Amber -The Guns of Avalon -Sign of the Unicorn -The Hand of Oberon -The Courts of Chaos Part 2 -Trumps of Doom -Blood of Amber -Sign of Chaos -Knight of Shadows -Prince of Chaos
Meredith Pierce -The Darkangel

FANTASY

Glen Cook
Tim Powers -The Drawing of the Dark "The real staff of life, and the only hope for the world as we know it is a single glass of beer. And to protect the beer an "over-the-hill" Irish mercenary. Enjoyable with the scent of magic everywhere.
Robert Jordan
David Eddings
BARRY HUGHART -BRIDGE OF BIRDS -THE STORY OF THE STONE The adventures of "Number 10 Ox" and "Master Li" in the ancient China that may never have been, but should have. Very funny, good mysteries, and good action. These could also go under mystery.
Ursula K. LeGuin The Earthsea Trilogy -A WIZARD OF EARTHSEA -THE TOMBS OF ATUAN -THE FARTHEST SHORE -Plus the newest one I don't remember the name of. _THE WINDS TWELVE QUARTERS (Excellent short stories)

MYSTERY

ELLIS PETERS -A MORBID TASTE FOR BONES -ONE CORPSE TOO MANY -MONK'S HOOD -SAINT PETER'S FAIR -THE LEPER OF SAINT GILES -THE VIRGIN IN THE ICE -THE SANCTUARY SPARROW -THE DEVIL'S NOVICE -DEAD MAN'S RANSOM -THE PILGRIM OF HATE -AN EXCELLENT MYSTERY -THE RAVEN IN THE FOREGATE -THE ROSE RENT -THE HERMIT OF EYTON FOREST -THE CONFESSION OF BROTHER HALUIN -THE HERETIC'S APPRENTICE -THE POTTER'S FIELD After an interesting career as a crusader Cadfael has joined the Benedictine Order and devoted his life to helping his fellow man as a healer. Unfortunately his fellow men and women of medieval England keep getting knocked off in mysterious and untimely ways. The Cadfael mysteries are generally warm hearted puzzles spiced with a little action here and there. They are one the few series that can be counted on for a "feel good" ending. Even if it may require a little connivance on the part of the authoress. You can catch these occasionally on PBS in a series which follows the books closely but falls short of the spirit occasionally. The lead actor seems more of a worry wart than the more genial and amiable character I read in the books. It does do an excellent job of bringing the period to life with well researched costumes and reasonably accurate settings. I highly recommend these books, especially if you happen to be a christian.
