After an interesting career as a crusader Cadfael has joined the Benedictine Order and devoted his life to helping his fellow man as a healer. Unfortunately his fellow men and women of medieval England keep getting knocked off in mysterious and untimely ways. The Cadfael mysteries are generally warm hearted puzzles spiced with a little action here and there. They are
one the few series that can be counted on for a "feel good" ending. Even if it may require a little connivance on the part of the authoress.
You can catch these occasionally on PBS in a series which follows the books closely but falls short of the spirit occasionally. The lead actor seems more of a worry wart than the more genial and amiable character I read in the books. It does do an excellent job of bringing the period to life with well researched costumes and reasonably accurate settings.
I highly recommend these books, especially if you happen to be a christian.
