With many tertiary educational institutes, this province in the region's center and is the "Taxila of the Northeast". (Taxila was a center of Buddhist learning in India).
Ku Santarat
Location : Tambon Nong Phai, Nadun district, about 5 km. from the district office. It is an ancient Khmer sanctuary facing east and consisting of a stupa and a library surrounded by a low wall, all built of laterite, except for the lintels and doorway columns which are of sandstone. Outside the wall to the northeast is a pond with laterite steps leading to its bottom.
This Mahayana Buddhist sanctuary's plan is similar to the "Aroknaya Sala" or ancient Khmer healing-house , many of which are found in the Northeast. It was built during the reign of King Jayavarman VII of Cambodia in the 13th century.
Phra That Nadun or Phra That Nakhon Champasi
This Buddhist monument is located about 500 m. from the Nadun district office and is known as the Phutthamonthon ( Buddha's Land ) of the Northeast.
The modern-style monument was designed by the Fine arts Department in imitation of a bronze stupa containing Buddha relics which was uncovered in 1979 in the area believed to be part of ancient Chapasi town. The same excavation also yielded many significant ancient objects,the best-known of which are the Dvaravati period votive tablets of different sizes. Some of these are now display at the Khon Kaen National Museum; others are in private collections.
