 gifticon.gif (361 bytes) Pha Taem is a high and preciptous sandstone cliff by the Mekhong River in Tambon Huay Phai,Khong Chiam district,     20 km. north of the sidtrict office.

    There is a series of prehistoric painting up the cliff starting from the sections called Pha Kham, Oha Taem and Pha Mon.  The area of paintings is estimated at no less than 400 m. in length , the longest in Southease Asia. There are pictures of human figures, hands, elephant,fishes,geometric forms , aquatic animal traps called "Tum" or "Khong", and some symbols which probably represent farming activities. All of them reflect the artists'  ideas and beliefs about their society.

    According to archaeologists, these paintings were created by the people in an agricultural society 2,000 to 4,000 years ago.

    The temple is located in Muang district by the Mun River. It was built in 1853 and has a Vietnamese-style ordination hall       ( constructed by local Vietnamese artisans ). The main attraction here is a sandstone lintel of the Sambor Preikuk period between 607-657, one of the oldest Khmer Lintels found in Thailand. The other ancient works of art are sculpted figures of the god Ganesa and female deities as well as carved stone boundary markers.
