Week 5: Raiders vs 49ers

I've had it pretty easy thrrough the first four weeks, but it looks like I'm in for a real challenge this week. The San Fransisco 49ers are the absolute best team in the game. Despite their 2-2 record--thanks to Atlanta and the NY Giants--I have plenty to wet my pants over. We all know about Jerry Rice and his ability to catch a football in quintuple coverage, as well as Ronnie Lott, who can come out of nowhere to intercept a pass, blindside a runner, or generally piss me off. But there's also Roger Craig and Tom Rathman, both of whom will burn me when I'm expecting a lob to a deep receiver, and the Niner I hate the most, Michael Carter. He can demolish my center at any time to give himself--or a fellow lineman--a clear path to my helpless QB. Let's just hope I can survive this one.

1st Quarter

On the opening drive, Bo Jackson nets zero on 2 runs and Matt Millen gets in a sack. Jeff Gossett punts from the goalline and the 49ers get prime field position at my 25. After 2 incompletions, Joe Montana hands it off to Rathman. Not only can he send defenders flying, but apparently he has some sweet moves--sweet enough to make 6 of my players miss en route to the endzone. On the next drive, Bo Jackson gets bombarded again but makes it up and more for a 1st down at midfield. Unfortunately I get no help from Marcus Allen or Jay Schroeder, who gets sacked by Millen again. After my second punt, the Niners run 3 times and end up punting (great coaching, Niners).

Maybe it was his strong odor...

Maybe I would feel less humiliated if it was a bomb to Rice instead of a 2 yard screen to Tom.

2nd Quarter

The 49ers call my plays again and I'm punting for the third time. They tease me with more runs and incomplete passes before Rice catches one in double-coverage for a first down. More cheapness ensues as Brent Jones catches one over the middle and runs for 34 yards to the 8. Craig inches them to the 2, and Montana finishes it off with a screen to Rathman to give him his 2nd TD. On the next drive, with 59 seconds remaining, Schroeder throws an awful pick to Ronnie Lott. However, Howie Long picks up a fumble by Craig with 1 second left in the half, and Mervyn Fernandez delivers nicely with a 55 yard touchdown

If it hadn't have been for a heads-up play by Long and a lucky hail mary, I'd be scoreless. San Fran's defense has been pulling out all the stops in order to mess things up for me. This isn't looking good for my Raiders.

3rd Quarter

Montana leads the charge at the start of the second half with 2 runs for 10 each, but Scott Davis puts an end to his scrambling with an 8 yard sack. Montana is under pressure on the next play, and throws an interception to Eddie Anderson, who runs it back to my own 28 yard line. Bo gets stuffed again on 1st down, so I go to the air with Schroeder, who throws a nice pass to Gault for 45 yards. I crawl my way to the 7 where Allen runs for the tying score. The 49ers employ their "run on every down" strategy again and the result is a punt.

I got your Montana Magic right here...

Oh...my...God...

4th Quarter

Bo runs for 12 after the punt, but things go sour after that and I punt it back again. Riki Ellison gets in his almost-mandatory sack, but Rathman runs twice to give the Niners a 1st down. Montana gets sacked by Davis again on the next play and, lucky enough for me, throws an interception to Anderson again. Wow, deja vu. With time running out, Bo runs for 22 yards to the 10 and I go nowhere on the next plays with 22 seconds left. Jeff Jaeger puts in the field goal for the win...or so would usually be the case. But with 1 second remaining, irony comes back to bite me square in the ass as Montana throws a 55 yard TD to Taylor for one of the most dramatic finishes I've ever witnessed in TSB.

Final

It was an ugly-assed game statwise, but a nailbiter to be sure. There were some really big plays and a lot of defense. This was Bo's worse game ever, but it was still an exciting game (if you could call a coached game exciting).

Player of the game: Eddie Anderson
  2 interceptions

Despite the loss, Anderson played a damn good game. Not only did he get 2 picks, but he helped the Raiders secondary hold Montana to 4 completions for 103 yards and prevent the 49ers from running up the scoreboard. Honorable mention goes to Scott Davis, who seemed to set up Anderson with a sack before each interception.
