Week 1: Raiders vs Oilers

My week 1 challenge is the Houston Oilers. This team is known for its virually unstoppable passing attack, and also its hording of great wide receivers. The best of the four is Drew Hill, who has no qualms about beating defenders deep and scoring at will. I can only hope some solid running, as well as a few timely Lorenzo White fumbles, can turn this game in my favor.

Bo's arm was probably pretty tired after all that spiking.

1st Quarter:

On the first drive Bo Jackson runs for 27 yards and then breaks the sound barrier on his way to a 40-yard TD. On the ensuing Oilers drive, Warren Moon shows off a little by missing deep passes to Drew Hill and making a short completion (think 10 yards) to Heywood Jeffries (misspellings aside). After bumping into Scott Davis for a sack (I call it a "sympathy sack") Moon guns it to Earnest Givins, who coughs up the pigskin to the Raiders. I waste the opportunity with 2 picked Bo runs and a worthless dump-off to Allen for 5.

2nd Quarter

Terry McDaniel pukes in the corner of the endzone after watching Hill jump 10 ft in the air.
Oilers waste no time making use of their good field with a 58-yard bomb (and I mean bomb) to Hill, who makes a leaping grab in the endzone for a touchdown. After a great return into Oilers territory by Brown, who was having a wonderful day, I go 3-and-out again to the 40. Jeff Jeager, being the mediocre kicker that he is, shanks it Norwood-style. After a 41-yard grab by Jeffries, I pick the next 2 plays and Riki Ellison and Davis (oh, they're not finished sacking either) each get a sack on Moon to force a Zendejas FG try, which goes wide left. More Bo on the next drive as he ends up going 63 yards for another big touchdown. Before the end of the half Gerald McNeil is injured on the following drive. This is usually the fate of most returners so I don't feel bad for him.

Haftime

This is turning into Bo Jackson vs Warren Moon here. Moon has thrown for 123 yards so far, but Bo has the edge with an amazing 124 yards rushing. Plus he has 2 touchdowns to Moon's 1. Hopefully that trend continues.
It's pretty sad when Scott Davis and Riki Ellison combine for 5 sacks.

3rd quarter

I pick yet another 2 plays that give Davis his 3rd sack and Ellison his 2nd. After a nice punt that puts me at my own 8 and two Allen runs up the middle for 0, I almost fall out of my chair while witnessing the next play. From out of nowhere, Shroeder hurls a moonball to Mervyn Fernandez, who gallops down the field to the Oilers 7. No, I'm not making this up; an 85 yard pass play to Fernandez. Take that, Mr. Moon. And of course I finish it off with a Bo Jackson TD. Enraged by Shroeder's display of one-upmanship, Moon blows off some steam by scrambling for 27 yards and handing off to a still fumble-less White twice for 14 more. However, he then gets sacked by Greg Townsend and becomes even more pissed off.

4th Quarter

After Houston turns it over on downs, Bo goes off again (he even makes a 19-yard catch!) and puts in yet another TD.  Moon, still enraged, throws a 20 yard strike to Givins to the Oilers 30, and then scrambles again, this time for 54 yards. After 2 White runs for 13 yards, Moon throws a measly 2-yarder to Hill for his 2nd score with 4 seconds left.

Final

Thanks to the fastest man in Tecmo, I delivered an old-fashioned beatdown to the Houston Oilers. Despite allowing 162 rush yards--including 100 from Moon--I held this high-powered passing attack to only 46% for 137 yards. And you know what's even weirder? White had 8 carries and didn't fumble once. Scary.

If he keeps playing like this, he'll be a weekly POTG (either that, or he'll bust a hip).
