You might say to yourself "Hey I want to be a GM. That would be cool." Well, if you're serious and you think you can handle the responsibility, we could use the help.
So what do you have to do? Well, you must meet a few basic requirements:
First off you have to know the system. That isn't as simple as it sounds. Knowing the system is more than knowing how to figure up stuff for your character. You must know how to calculate everything for your character or ANY other character. As a GM one of your biggest responsibilities is to help new players. If they give you a set of stats and items you must be able to tell them their max damage, max hp's, max cure, what most items do, what their bonus to hit is with this and that. This is one of the biggest hurdles you must jump before you will even be considered as a GM. You're allowed to use cheat sheets, but you really should be able to calculate these things with only the info in your head. You will be given a test on these things.
If you want to become a GM study the "Gaming System" pages and all of the shops thoroughly.
Next you must have one of the following: Good writing skills, an active imagination, or an exceptionally high mastery of the system. All three are desirable but just having 1 of those things will get you to the next step.
Next you must have time. Being a GM is like a part time job. You will have certain responsibilities you must do on a daily or weekly basis. You are a volunteer but you must be willing to put in the time to do the job you've volunteered for.
Next, you must have the ability to act in a dignified manner. This has nothing to do with how you play your characters. If you choose to play the evilest, grossest, silliest, or meanest character in the city, that's your business. But, while in your GM nick, you are a representative of the game. Your actions reflect on us all.
While in your GM nick, you will be expected you act as if you are at work, in church, or meeting your partner's parents for the first time. You must be polite, civil, and well behaved. A GM sets the example for good behavior and must conduct him/herself in a manner which deserves respect. Save your creative expression for your character nicks.
Next, you must be able to act impartially in all situations. You must treat everyone equally. While in your GM nick, you have no friends or enemies. Everyone must be treated civilly. You must keep a cool head and act in a professional manner towards everyone. I know this is a tall order but it is an absolute must. If all else fails you must be willing to keep your mouth shut and walk away when your temper begins to flare. You will not be faulted if you ask another GM to handle the situation or if you simply leave the room. However letting loose a string of obscenities before you do so will not be tolerated.
Next you must be able to run a few quests or duels under supervision from a senior GM. You will be judged on your control of the room, again on your knowledge of the system, your fairness, and (in the case of quests) your creativity.
Still think you have what it takes? Well here 's what your responsibilities will be:
1. Quest GM's must run a minimum of 1 quest per week which lasts 1 1/2 hours or more, not counting the time taken to take down stats of the players. This quest must at least be a hack and slash or more event. The GM must allow characters to use full armor and at least 1 weapon. This quest can not be paintballs or anything else which requires very little GMing skills. If the GM wants to run more than their 1 quest in a week their extra quest can be paintballs, shooting contests or anything else they want.
2. Duel GM's must run a minimum of 2 hours of duels per week. These must be on Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday. Duelers must be allowed to choose any rules they want during these sessions.(i.e. The GM can not say hand to hand duels only, no magic duels, no spells allowed etc.. If the duelers choose these rules then they are ok.) The only exceptions to this rule are Perma-Death duels and Duels for leadership of gangs. Certain Senior GM's handle these duels.
3. Monitor GM's (except Techies and Updaters) must monitor 5 hours per week in #Nessus. The most desired way to do this is 1 hour per day, 5 days per week. You may work 2 hours on some days to make up for days missed or to plan for days when you know you have irl reasons to be absent. When a GM monitors is up to him or her. It makes no difference whether a GM monitors at 5 PM or 5 AM as long as the time is put in. The only rule to monitoring is only two GM's can monitor at any given time. Techies and Updaters may monitor for payment if they wish but because they have other responsibilities it's not required.
Ok now you know the rules and responsibilities. Think you can handle them? Here's what is in it for you. This is a non-profit game so we can not pay you irl cash, but we do pay a character of your choosing.
