Obsession

“I’m Vanessa and I love Tony Danza and I’m going to send him mental messages now” … “Look I can make myself cry.” …“I’m flying over Arizona now! Oh no, I lost the connection.”

And that was the first impression that I made on my bestest bud, sarah.

It was long before this, though, that the obsession began… A girl of about 10 years old was always watching television shows with her mom. She started to get interested in a particular show; who’s the boss? Then she noticed a corny little Italian man with a funny accent named tony. That’s when this madness all began. Her mom started watching it less and she starting watching it more. She became addicted and almost cursed out jerry lewis for having his muscular dystrophy marathon run during the who’s the boss? time slot one day. How dare he. She started taping the shows, labeling them, organizing them, and memorizing them; Once dictating word for word the whole proposal scene between tony and angela. She wrote incessantly about tony in her journal; almost daily, and even wrote him a few letters. She made scenarios in her head about tony spending the day with his family ( though secretly hating them because she would have rather that he marry angela, judith’s character. ) after doing a little math she figures out that tony is 33 years older then her. this number becomes her favorite instantly. also, she somehow tied tony into a class diary assignment. She wrote that she was a big time rock star ( with the name of anne Micelli, of course ) who was friends with tony danza and frequently toured with him. The children snickered; the teacher just shook her head. And then there were those glorious lunch periods. Often times she would separate herself from the group and sit alone and send mental messages to her love. At night she dreamt of him. Having several dreams In which he fell in love with her, and also when he and angela finally got to be together. some were sweet, ALL were retarded. She watched tony on many many talk shows and even sits through half an hour of sesame street to see him play ping pong with big bird. So then this girl realizes that tony is doing a variety show in which he sings, dances, and shows clips of his old tv shows. She is inspired by him to take up tap lessons, and drops some hints to her parents so that they’ll take her to see him. They finally agree to it, bringing her to atlantic city to see his show. she steals sugar packets and tea stirrers from the merv griffin buffet food place so that she can remember her stay there, and never forget how she saw tony. She is in a trance while watching him and can’t believe he is so close to her. she is almost certain that he will call her up on stage. Big surprise, he does not. the girl is sad and yet so very happy. then she receives mail from him on the very day that she makes the union softball team. She writes in her journal ‘this was the best day of my life.’ And can barely open the letter since she is shaking so much with excitement. Inside is his signature! Months later her parents give her another one in a frame that she places on the wall next to her bed. Every morning she wakes to look at his face and soon thinks that maybe she should change in another room to make sure things stay proper and tasteful. She looks at him and lets out a sigh while listening to her bon jovi cds. All the songs remind her of tony. Everything reminds her of tony. Her enfatuation seems to be spiraling a bit out of control and soon she wishes that she could get over him. But how?! And so she must endure a new hardship. Getting over the man she loves. Did it all work out? Well…here she is, 5 years later, making a webpage about him so I’m thinking no. poor poor retarded little girl.
