TV Guide: Hudson Street

Stars: Lori Loughlin, Tony Danza, Jerry Adler, Frankie J. Galasso, Christine Dunford, Shareen Mitchell, Tom Gallop

High Concept: Moonlighting meets Barney Miller.

Premise: A conservative Hoboken homicide detective who shares joint custody of his spunky son wiht a wise-cracking ex-wife develops a love-hate relationship with a left-leaning newspaper reporter.

They say: "We were really interested in doing a romantic comedy with a Tracy Hepburn kind of chemistry," says executive producer Randi Mayem Singer. "It's a bit more sophisticated than what else you might find out there."

We say: Tracy and Hepburn? Not quite. Danza's blue-collar charm is out in full force, but Loughlin's character is too humorless to make watching these two tango enjoyable. The show is far more successful when Danza is center stage, alone, as a mature version of the loveable lugs he played on Taxi and Who's The Boss?

Bottom Line: The ever-popular Danza is back in a tailor made series scheduled between two of TV's top draws, Roseanne and Home Improvement. Any questions?
