TV Guide's Insider: A Detour For Tony Danza
His Hudson Street is in hiatus instead of hitsville. What happened?
It looks like the third time's no charm for Tony Danza. The ex-boxer had two hit sitcoms in a row--Taxi and Who's the Boss?-- but his Hudson Street is on the ropes. First, costar Lori Loughlin left the show. Then it was moved from Tuesday ( following the still-popular Roseanne) to Saturday (opposite the hit Dr. Quinn). Now, with four original episodes still unshown, the series has been put on hiatus by ABC.
What went wrong? Says Loughlin, "Midway into it they made us switch gears. ABC gave notes to change from romantic comedy to domestic comedy. There were too many cooks. Tony had ABC, TriStar, and produces telling him what to do. Noone would assume responsibility." (Talk about your Who's The Boss?)
Danza is an executive producer as wel as a star, and early in the show's run he acknowledged the jobs were daunting. "It's very scary," he said. "On Who's the Boss? I used to show up and say, 'Hey, give me the script.' This one, they come to me and say, 'Hey, give me the script,'"
A month ago, Loughlin called Danza to her dressing room. "They had done a rewrite. My part was down to nothing. I said, ;Let me go.' He told me he didn't want to, but that i should go home and he would figure it out. It really started faling apart after that. He was a team player: There were no tantrums, no fights. But Tony is sad." But dont cry for Danza or Loughlin. She's just signed a deal with DreamWorks for a sitcom about a woman jilted at the altar. And Danza's Katie Face Productions is behind the successful Before They were Stars, while he himself is performing in nightclubs. Besides, Danza has perspective: "When you have a show that runs eight years...it's a hard act to follow," he told TV Guide earlier in the season. "[Lucille Ball] came back in a show that didn't measure up. So if Lucy could fail-- holy mackerel!"
