The avengers was a stylish blend of espionage, fantasy and quasi-science fiction it is witty, sentimental and off beat, and is now a cult favorite

It's first airing was back in January 1961 through to September 1969, with 161 episodes in total.

The Avengers became one of the most popular television series of all time, eventually reaching audiences in 120 countries, a record that still stands today. Much of the shows popularity was due to the eventual pairing of Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg as agents John Steed and Emma Peel. The Steed/Peel episodes have a formula that is familiar and comfortable.

Before there was Peel there was a male agent partner for Steed this was physician Dr David Keel (Ian Hendry) then two seasons with Cathy Gale (Honor Blackman) of Pussy Galore fame at this time there was also Dr Martin King and jazz singer Venus Smith. The Cathy Gale episodes are such a contrast to the Peel episodes, Steed was less refined and the stories were much more serious than some of the ridiculous plots in the Peel episodes and in my view the wonderful chemistry was not there between these two actors
But all this changed when the brilliant Mrs Emma Peel became his partner, Steed became a stylish, suave sophisticated gentleman. Diana Rigg was certainly a good excuse to watch!!! as displayed opposite!!!! but she also became a style icon and her feisty yet demure character made her a role model for free spirited sixties women. But what really made the show was the chemistry between Steed and Peel, the flirting and the teasing, made the partnership believable and fun to observe. Of course there was always the catch for the audience in the will they won't they scenario of course they never did and I believe it would have spoilt the magic had they have done.
