Lost Innocence

A giggle fills the night sky,

As the little girl swings on life’s swings.

Her father is smiling, watching,

Not knowing if he should tell her,

Never darling, please never grow up.

He runs his hand over her cheek,

Sweet innocence nudges back.

Eyes bright blue shine as stars,

Never darling, please never grow up.

A drole of a dove calls above,

And her face rises to the stars.

Scanning the frontier of forgiveness and love,

Never darling, please never grow up.

I take her hand and lead her home,

Milk and cookies wait, bringer of sleep and dreams.

As we walk through the distant darkness,

Silence abounds, time caught in eternity,

Never darling, please never grow up.

Snow falls onto a frozen lake,

As we circle to reach our home.

She smiles and licks and kisses the sky,

Footprints of an angel trail her spirit,

Never darling, please never grow up.

Opening the door, scurry in my pride.

Bringer of sleep and dreams disappears,

We walk upstairs and I tuck her in,

Collapsing in tears I wake from my dream,

For she has been dead for years.
