Beat Room promo recording, Glasgow, UK -by William Wilson.
THE ARCHES, GLASGOW, 13/11/01.

6.10 p.m. - home from work, do the e mails, what's there tonight? Bold pink type - hey, that's MissJerseyIs - Nerina's just gone & put me on the guest list for tonight, after seeing my posts about being unable to get a ticket for the BBC2 Scotland Beat Room recording! How good is she!

6.25 p.m. - v. quick wash & change, & out. Glasgow's 20 miles away, the M8 is always choc-a-bloc around now, & the show begins at 7.30. Haul ass, William! 4 miles out, there's a 3 mile tailback, slow moving traffic, but I get to the Arches for 7.25p.m. & how I need a beer!

8.20 p.m. - Nerina takes the stage, some camera problems or something before things get started. Fine, I've got my breath back, I'm stagefront, plum in front of her microphone. & is she 'mod' tonight! - grey, high heeled ankle length boots, designer 'pop art' style skirt, bullseye/ target t-shirt, denim jacket. Just class. Band are the usual suspects - Jeremy, Tim, Mark (where was Mark on the Saturday Show?). First up, Nerina takes her 'country' guitar, it's the usual opener, 'Very Good Sir', & it's gorgeous. Ever felt like your face was being stroked by a warm feather? That's the effect of 'VGS' live, it rolls & purrs along. Nerina's settled & confident, jokes later about a blonde moment & how she likes playing up here, totally nonplussed by the cameras. 6 more songs on the night - Daily Bread, Alien, If I Know You (next single, next year she tells me afterwards - probably backed with two new songs), Blood Is Blood, Rainbow, Patience (not in that order). Goldfrapp are headlining, so the set is shorter than usual, & it flies by all too soon. No room for encores, tv rules tonight. There weren't many Nerina fans there, the freeloaders were out for the night like I thought they would be (Who's she? Who are Goldfrapp? Are they any good? etc),but we made ourselves heard, 'Nerina' resounding soccer chant style after every song.

Backstage later, we're talking - I tell Nerina one thing that strikes me is that, like the late Jeff Buckley, she never plays DFS songs the same way live twice in shows. I see variations - quieter intros, more 'rock outs', soft songs harder & louder. She likes that, wants to do that bit more, make the live shows worthwhile.  I've met Nerina before, so pleasant, answers all the questions, she's 'brand new' as the saying up here goes!

Thanx again missjerseyis - I won't forget you putting yourself out for me - last review (King Tut's) I mentioned I'd stand you a port & brandy when you came back up here - we weren't near the bar, so, it's on hold till next time. Won't forget the cds I mentioned. Come back soon.

& Goldfrapp? Don't know. Work beckoned, & I'd seen who I wanted to. I went home. Very Good Miss Pallot. You'd brightened my northern sky.
