New Forest

The bulk of the trip with Justin's parents was spent in the New Forest, along the south coast of England. Upon arriving to the area, we immediately stopped at the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu (pronounced bew'-lee). Despite its title, it actually has lots of stuff to do and see. But we arrived with only slightly more than an hour to closing, so we went straight for the cars. It has an impressive array of cars, including some very old cars (among the first models on the roads) and some very fast cars (a few of the land speed setting rocket cars). Malachi enjoyed a display which had a button to make a car horn sound. Nanny is standing in front of an 1893 Daimler.

After that was a drive through the heart of the New Forest to a pub, recommended by the old guys at Beaulieu. The "New" is a bit misleading; it was set aside as a hunting park by William I in 1079. Eventually some ponies were brought to the area, and for a few centuries now they have been an integral part of the Forest. They're also one of the reasons Justin wanted to see the area. On our drive to the pub, we saw quite a few ponies, grazing in the strange New Forest fields or along-side the road. After an excellent dinner at the pub, we went to the bed and breakfast.

The next morning began with a hike through the New Forest, along a former railway. After a while, we left the railway and hiked into a large bit of trees. We could see ponies from the railway, and as we headed into the forest, we passed two ponies. But that was about it. They weren't particularly afraid of us, but neither were they eager for our presence. It was a great walk through a different bit of English scenery.

We still had a little time before we had to head back, so we went back to Beaulieu and the Motor Museum. Justin's parents walked around the ruins of a monastery, while Justin and Malachi took an elevated monorail thing which made a large figure-eight around the entire grounds. After that it was back home, with only a short delay for a very serious accident on the M25.
