Nerat Weyr Persona - Wryen

Nerat Weyr operates with permission from Anne McCaffrey.
Last Update: 11th November 2004

Played by Thalia

Age:
13 (as of Oct. '04)
Rank:
Candidate
Appearance:
Wryen is just a little under six feet tall, though his overlarge hands and feet suggest that a much taller man is somewhere in the making. His wheat-colored hair is straight and tied into a ponytail at his neck. The front could stand to use a little grooming, as it falls down in front of his green eyes.

The jacket he wears looks like it was made of leather and wool, both of which are worn down from use. Underneath is a beige tunic which also appears well-used and is just a little too big for him. The same goes for his pants, which are leather with white creases along the knees. The only thing that looks particularly new is a set of black ankle-high boots.
Personality:
Despite having lived on the road his entire life, Wryen has been well educated, mostly by his mother. He knows how to read and write, as well as the basics of history around Pern. While etiquette was part of his education, this area was undermined by his father, who never thought it a priority. Wryen doesn't mean to be crude, but things like swearing (I'll keep it off camera) or whipping his mouth on his shirt really mean very little to the boy.

He doesn't have the skills of a beast crafter, but he knows the basics of taking care of animals. After all, if your horses are sick, they don't move. If your horses don't move, you can't get to the next hold. His behavior is similar when it comes to children. He doesn't particularly like children, but as the holdest, it is his job to herd them and he's become good at it.
Background:
Wryen's mother, Rya, was a pretty, sweet and well mannered daughter of a very successful holder in the north. He was an old man and she was his only daughter and youngest child, with his sons having already moved away. He doted on her continuously but resisted marrying her off for that very reason. While Rya loved her father, she was growing older and didn't want to spend her years along with him.

Enter Wryen's father, Wenal. He was only a decade away from being as old as Rya's father and hadn't spend his years half as wisely. Wenal was holdless and had been leading a caravan as far back as anyone could remember. Despite his status, he seemed to be successful and wielded charm around quite easily. Before the old man could do anything to stop them, Wenal would take Rya as his own, to join him in a life of being holdless.

Rya loved her husband, but fantasy became reality quite quickly on the road, especially after Wryen was born without the luxury of a healer. Rya would learn that her husband's success didn't come from trading or bargaining: it came from cons and thievery. Still, she would stick dutifully by him, even through thick and thin. This would also include helping raise children by the other women he would frequent, even throughout their marriage.

Due to complications during pregnancy, Wryen would be Rya's only child. For this reason, she decided early that he was not going to be like his father. There was no going home for her, but perhaps things could be different for her. She made it a point to educate the boy and try to teach him that the way they lived was wrong.

Near his thirteenth birthday, the caravan approached Nerat Weyr. While Wenal had more con tricks in mind, Rya was able to convince him to hold these off this time around. Instead, she sent Wryen into the weyr, in an attempt to live with an uncle who had settled there.
Abilities:
Wryen is good with doing what it takes to make a group of people move, whether it be herding children, smacking a missing part back onto a wagon or checking a runner's hooves. In a way, he is a jack of all trades, though he really hasn't mastered any of them. His knowledge is practical and he is good at finding the simplest way toward getting something done.

Another thing Wryen is good at is slight of hand, as much as his mother would thing otherwise. While theft and pick pocketing hold little use, you can count on Wryen is you want something stolen. He also has his father's charisma, and with this comes the ability to lie when needed. Luckily for him, he doesn't do these things often.
Posessions:
