Log from Nerak (This follows Alain's Guard FA class)

Alain, Ryana, and Sudanna are here.

"Ah, 'scuse me, miss, could you stay behind just a second?" Alain asks, striding over toward Ryana, aka the girl with the crutch, as the class participants filter out. "Sorry--didn't want to drag you aside during the class. Alain, senior apprentice." he introduces himself, offering a hand to shake.

Ryana blinks, looking somewhat surprised at being detained. She nods slowly, smiling as she struggles to stand back up, juggling crutches and sling as she holds out her hand, smiling hesitantly. "Ryana. Herder Apprentice."

[NerakChat] Nerak: how does she use crutches w/a sling? 0.o

[NerakChat] Alain: She's talented.

[NerakChat] Nerak: I guess so... if a person /really/ had both an arm injury and a leg injury, they'd probably either be using a walker with a forearm support, or a wheelchair...

Alain shakes Ryana's hand, careful not to jostle her, and nods, "Well met, herder. Dare I ask...?" he trails off, nodding toward said crutch and sling. "I'm guessing you've already had a healer take a peek at that?" he asks, shifting around to settle on one of his legs in a chair.

[NerakChat] Alain: Ah, she doesn't have a healer alt--don't be too hard on her. She's a good kid--had a real zinger of a mentor...yadda yadda...

[NerakChat] Alain: Bwaha, but thanks for overseeing the class. It was fun to teach again...hadn't done it in a while and there were actually a few people interested...

[NerakChat] Nerak: yeah, that was a really nice class. you did a great job. I was making hte comments here, not going to mention it to her...

[NerakChat] Alain nods, "Thanks...I try. ^.^ Nah--she's actually in my city...met her and all and she's pretty spiff. Amusingly annoyed with the same people that annoy most people and all--she was here a few years ago, left and came back..."

Ryana shrugs, leaning back against the chair. "A healer in Keroon looked at it, but I only just came here. It's a pretty recent injury, but they said the arm should be okay really soon." She shrugs, looking down at the leg, and bites her lip, remembering the healer's words about her leg.

Alain notices and follows Ryana's glance toward her leg and raises an eyebrow, "Mind if I ask what the diagnosis is? What exactly did they say was wrong with them? Sprain? Strain? Twist?" He could carry on the list, but refrains from doing so, and leans against the chair back, propping his chin up on the palm of one hand.

Ryana shrugs. "The wrist is sprained. The leg is...it's bad. I don't really remember what they said." She blushes, shrugging a little. "I don't remember much from that night, really. But they said...they said I might never be able to ride again."

Nerak is listening to the conversation, but doesn't want the girl to be more self-consious, so she stays where she is, drinking her klah and making herself look busy and like she is not listening...

Alain nods, "Well, for the wrist, you'll want to keep it immobile--mind if I take a look at the wrapping? But for you leg--what ever it is, you'll want to talk to Morallen. He specializes in rehabilitation." Gee, he has connections, too. A short glance is offered Nerak-wards, though he doesn't seem to mind her listening in. Just get him in a room with a corpse, though--he'd never know if a whole crowd was watching him.

[Healer] Sudanna: need a bonehealer?

Ryana looks a little surprised at the attention, nodding. "I don't mind." She holds the arm in the sling out towards Alain. "Do you think this...Morallen...would be able to tell me what was wrong with my leg? Or maybe help? Maybe let me ride again, someday?" A faint hope shows in her eyes, muted as she tries not to hope too hard.

[NerakChat] Nerak is a bonehealer, as is Sudanna... might be a good idea for a bonehealer to take a look?

You paged Ryana with: Nerak pages, "Nerak is a bonehealer, as is Sr. Journeyman Sudanna. They specialize in bone injuries. What is 'officially' wrong with the leg? With a bonehealer and physical therapy by Morallen, she probably could ride again..."

[NerakChat] Aerrin didn't know you were bonehealing Neark.

From afar, Ryana grins. "Officially, it was broken when she got kicked by a runner...so it's probably broken, chipped, and other similarly unpleasant things. Honestly, I'm still not totally certain I want her to recover fully. But having the possibility there would be nice."

Nerak looks up from the cabinet, hearing that the girl wanted to know more about her injury. Her bonehealer curiosity perks up and she walks over to the girl. "Hello, I'm Journeywoman Nerak. I couldn't help but overhear your questions about your leg. I specialize in bonehealing... I'd like to take a look if you don't object?" She knows that people often get nervous around journeymen.

Alain shrugs lightly, reaching for Ryana's arm and gently straightening it from the sling. He cradles it lightly, examining it as he replies, "Well, he's in rehabilitation. If the bone is broken, you'll want to see a bone specialist...Sudanna or Nerak, I think. But once the bones have all healed, you'd want to see Morallen about regaining your mobility in the leg."

Ryana looks up, nodding. "Um...yes. I mean, no. I mean," she blushes, flustered. "I don't mind." She looks from one healer to the other, still fairly surprised by all the attention. "Thank you. Both of you."

Nerak grins, "I'll wait until Alain is done with your arm first. So, when did the accident happen?" She's wondering how long the healing has been taking place. She watches as Alain carefully looks at her arm.

Alain looks up as Nerak...well...appears? Not really, but in any case he nods and carefully returns Ryana's arm to her sling. "It's wrapped well, just try and keep it immobile. Thanks, Journeywoman," he adds to Nerak, "I don't really know anything about bones beyond the obvious and basic."

You paged Sudanna with: Nerak pages, "As I think about this, if you are looking for a subject to try your leg brace on, she'd be a good one! She says that her leg was broken, shattered, splintered, etc. Might be a good idea!"

You paged Ryana with: Nerak pages, "ok... got the info on the leg... is the arm just a sprain? That is the feeling I'm getting from the RP..."

Sudanna pages, "Maybe. But I'm not sure we could do much for her. When I shattered my ankle, I was attacked with pins and such. We don't do that here..."

From afar, Ryana nods. "The arm's a sprain, it'll heal without complication...the leg can get more complicated."

Ryana sighs softly. "Ten days ago, Journeywoman. I..." she shakes her head, still angry with herself. "I was working with a rehabilitated runner. It's...it /was/...my job. Master Lesana offered me a place at Ista, and a new specialty, at least until my leg heals."

You paged Sudanna with: Nerak pages, "hmmm, good point. Her page was this :Officially, it was broken when she got kicked by a runner...so it's probably broken, chipped, and other similarly unpleasant things. Honestly, I'm still not totally certain I want her to recover fully. But having the possibility there would be nice. I just thought that it might be soemthing to try..."

Sudanna pages, "The girl in question is a good RPer, but a bit angsty. So, let her not heal if that's her choice."

Nerak nods and smiles at Alain, then offers the girl a grin "I see. It sounds like you have a bit of healer in you as well!" She says this while unwrapping the girl's leg carefully as she talks. Once it is unwrapped, she takes a good look at it. "Well, it looks like it is healing well. Are you making sure to not put /any/ weight on it? I'm sure it is difficult using the crutches with an injured arm." She wonders if there was an extra wheelchair around in a storage room, that would be better for her to use with both an arm and a leg injury.

Ryana sighs softly, nodding. "I'm careful. And I'm kind of a failed healer...failed herder, too." She sits back down, looking at her feet as she talks. "I don't put any weight on it. It's a little hard, with the sling and all, but once that's healed it'll be easier. And it's almost healed."

Alain bites back a comment about Nerak having a healer in -her- and proceeds to listen quietly as Ryana is given the once-over by the Journeywoman. "Find a friend to carry you around, if you can," he does manage to comment, though, accompanied by a little smirk. The smirk fades and he offers the girl a little smile, "Don't be too hard on yourself. Everyone fails at some point in their life. I'm a failed lots of things...never worked out my being a girl or my being a smith, but I make a fair healer, I suppose."

Sudanna pages, "Okay.. claify that one.. My ankle (broken in 6 placed) took 5 months to heal enough to start therapy."

Ryana scowls, shrugging. "It was stupid. My mentor died, no one else could take care of her mare. But her mare wouldn't let me touch her. I didn't have any other choice, but...she got me. Bad. And now I may never get to work with runners again. Not to mention missing my mentor, and her runners, and Keroon, and..." she trails off, blinking back tears. "Sorry," she mutters under her breath.

Nerak nods, "Well, dear, I think it might be best for you not to try to walk too much until you can use your arm without pain. We can write a healer's note for you to stay off your feet as much as possible." She looks back at Alain and smiles, hearing the playfulness in his voice. She then sets the leg up on the cot and begins to run her hands down the leg, stopping occasionally to feel certain areas of the leg. With a look of concentration on her face, she says "I'm sorry if this hurts, or is uncomfortable. I'm trying to figure out how well it is healing. Let me know if it hurts too much." Afterall, Pern doesn't have x-ray machines. After hearing about the girl's mentor, the look on her face softens as she looks up. "Oh, that is awful. It doesn't seem like it's your fault at all, though. Runners can be quite unpredictable."

You paged Sudanna with: Nerak pages, "yeah, I've known people who have done similar things... and knw it took them a /long/ time to heal, if at all..."

Ryana shakes her head, wincing a little. "It's all right...doesn't hurt too much." She sighs softly. "And thanks for the offer of a note, but I need to do some work, or I'll go crazy. It's okay, though. I'm working with felines, and until the arm heals I'm doing nothing but paperwork, really."

Sudanna pages, "And it would hurt like /hell/ without drugs. ..:>"

You paged Ryana with: Nerak pages, "I was just talking to one of the other healers who had shattered her ankle IRL, and she said it took /months/ before her ankle was well enough to even start thinking about therapy. You might want to think about that... She also says it /really hurt/ without painkillers."

From afar, Ryana nods, thinking for a bit. "The months to heal is more or less what I'm looking for. Does it work ICly for her to be on crutches, though? Maybe splinted, immobilized, that kind of thing?"

Nerak smiles, "That is what I meant... you definately need to be doing paperwork, keeping that leg up. The more you use it, the more it will swell and the longer it will take to heal. You need to be really careful with this injury so that it heals well. I'm sure in your craft there is plenty that can be done while sitting down... I really don't want you to be walking around much. If something needs to be done, send someone else to do it." She is now pulling rank, using her bonehealing specialty how is should be used. "Do you understand? If you happen to fall on the crutches, you could very easily injure it much more than it is now." Ok... don't want to scare her, but want her to understand how fragile this injury is.

You paged Ryana with: Nerak pages, "no... honestly, crutches with a splint wouldn't work. She'd be in a wheelchair. You can RP one until the arm heals. With the leg broken /that/ bad, it would definately be immobilized and splinted."

Sudanna pages, "Suggest you splint/resplint the leg. Let her know it's un-bendable at the knee?"

[healers] Nerak: um... I don't imagine Pern has plaster of paris for a cast?

[healers] Aerrin: No. We don't have casts

[healers] Aerrin: Just splints.

[healers] Aerrin: Which means that you can't walk on a broken leg.

[healers] Sudanna: Nope, we use bandages soaked in numbweed, which hardens according to Anne fairly well.

[healers] Sudanna: not stiff/stiff, but and as Aer said, we don;t walk.

You paged Sudanna with: Nerak pages, "yeah, we've been paging each other about that. I also told her that with a splint, it isnt' likely she'd be using crutches... she'd be in a w/c"

Sudanna pages, "Well, crutches maybe, but she wouldn't be allowing her leg to pull downward is the bigger issue."

From afar, Ryana nods, shrugging. "Then let's go with that."

[healers] Nerak: ah... I see! I never heard of that. I'll have to do it! hehe... Sudanna, I'd love for you to come in as senior bonehealer and see it... as I said...it might be a good for the leg brace...

[healers] Sudanna: I'll poke my head in..

Ryana sighs softly, nodding. "Well, I guess you're right...but I hate being so useless. Isn't there something I could do?"

[healers] Nerak: great! ok, and I'll send an appy to get a wheelchair from the storage room... I know that Pern has one.

[healers] Aerrin: We do?

Sudanna bustles in, oblivious to the others in the room, nose buried in hides as the sr. journeywoman sighs dramatically. "no, not good, won't do at all. Hardly enough tins for the next numbweed salve making." Shards and shards again...

[healers] Nerak: yep... there's one in the create list that can be copied.

[Staff_of_healers] Aerrin: Hm. Though, I suppose there's no reason we wouldn't. Wouldn't be much like what we think of, but a chair with wheels is easy

Nerak is still looking at the leg, feeling for heat over the bones, looking for infection and the like. She hears Sr. Journeyman Sudanna walk in. "Ah, Sudanna. Just in time. I'd like your opinion on Ryana's leg. She was here as a student for Alain's first aid class, and he kept her after to talk to her about her injuries." She flashes a smile back at the apprentice, letting him know he did the right thing. "Ryana, this is Sr. Journeywoman Sudanna. She is also a bonehealer, my teacher as well." She grins up at her bonehealing mentor and friend. "I don't feel any heat over the wounds, it doesn't seem to be infected. She had a run in with a runner."

[healers] Nerak: yeah, that was actually my first thought as a jman project, but found that there was one in the database already.

From afar, Ryana would like whatever advice you can give...she'd like an injury that doesn't leave her bedridden or anything equally RP-killing, but she really wants to explore what happens when Ryana has that many changes made to her life.

Ryana looks up, nodding slowly. "Well met, Senior Journeywoman. Journeywoman Nerak and Senior Apprentice Alain were kind enough to look over my injuries after the class."

Sudanna lifts sapphire blue eyes from her hides as her name is spoken. "Hello Nerak, Ryana, is it? What ever did you do to your self?" A soft smile creases her face as eyes assess the damaged leg before her. "How long ago did this happen and what have you been doing for it?" The healer is all business as the injury demands her attention. "Is the initial bonesetting your work, Nerak?"

Nerak looks at one of hte apprentices in the room and calls him over. "Jonah, go down to the storage area and get one of the wheeled chairs. I think this girl will be needing it for a while." She watches as the boy leaves, knowing it will take him several minutes before he comes back. "You should be using this chair for at least 2 months. With an injury that bad, you need to keep it as still as possible. It may be hard for you to push yourself, so you might want to get a friend or fellow herder to push you when you need to go anywhere. I'll get an apprentice to take you back to the herder hall this evening." She looks back over to Sudanna, "No, ma'am. Not my work. This is actually the first time I've met her too."

You paged Ryana with: Nerak pages, "Definately use a wheelchair for that time... you can add it to your desc, or you can actually create one if you know how... but that is a little much for just 2 months of RP..."

Ryana sighs softly. "I was trying to work with a runner...she was giving birth, and she wouldn't let anyone but my mentor touch her...but my mentor died, and she...she wouldn't let me near her. And I kept trying." She shrugs, frowning, then adds by way of explanation, "The injury happened in Keroon. About ten days ago, I guess. Master Lesana offered me a place in Ista, and a new specialty. I've been doing paperwork for now, waiting until my arm heals and my leg's a little better." She looks up at Nerak, eyes wide. "Do I really need a chair? Can't I just use crutches?"

From afar, Ryana nods. "That works. But it won't stop her from being stubborn.

You paged Ryana with: Nerak pages, "I wouldn't think it would! hehe."

Sudanna startles, but thinks better of questioning the odd circumstances. "So, how exactly did you hurt the leg? I mean, what happened in specifics? is it broken? Did you see a healer? How did you get to Ista from keroon?" The entire time she is speaking she is lightly moving her hands about and over the leg. No open wounds, so there is nothing compound at least. "Nerak, how was it bound when you first met Ryana?" Coming in on a consult takes some catching up.

From afar, Ryana grins

Ryana looks a little surprised at all the questions, but answers them readily. "I got kicked in the leg. The arm got hurt when I was trying to leave the enclosure. It's broken. I saw a healer when it happened. I rode here a-dragonback, wrapped up tightly in lots of warm clothes and more or less held in place by two people." she winces a litle as the healer's hands hit sensitive spots, but she appears to be all right aside from the obvious.

Nerak explains to Sudanna, "Well, she actually came in here using crutches while her arm is splinted. She told me it was sprained. Her leg was just bandaged with a soft bandage." The sound of disapproval in her voice - she can't beleive anyone would give someone crutches who also has an arm injury... Just as she is saying this, the apprentice returns with the wheelchair. "Thank you, Jonah. We'll be needing this later." She returns her attention to Ryana, Sudanna and the leg.

[healers] Nerak: yeah... she said it was not broken.

[OOC:] Nerak says "ok... that was not very specific. The arm is sprained, the leg is broken."

[OOC:] Ryana chuckles. "Sorry."

[OOC:] Nerak says "hehe, I was the one who typed it wrong! hehe..."

[OOC:] Sudanna says "Okay.. what's what?"

Ryana shrugs, a little sheepish. "I was the one who insisted on that. I didn't want to be useless. Master Lesana was kind enough to give me a place here, I wanted to be able to help her."

[NerakChat] Nerak: Alain, you can pipe in info if you want! You dont have to sit quietly in a corner... You started this, and unfortunately, we took over...

[healers] Nerak: just looked back through the log... the wrist is sprained.

Sudanna says, "Well, being helpful is fine, but you will be no help to anyone without proper care and healing." The tone of her voice is a little tough, but there is no sense coddling a patient and allowing further damage to be done. "If you ever want to use that leg properly again, you need to /not/ use it at all for now. I can feel several places that could be breaks, and I am sure there is deep muscle and tissue damage as well. You will be off it for at least 3 months." She is all matter-of-fact business now. "As to the arm, let's see.. " A swift, gentle handling and she smiles again. "No breaks, but again.. no use til it's better healed. I am sure the crutches didn't help your healing at all." She steps back and grabs two measured splints and numbweed. "I'm not sure how you have been handling the pain, but there is no need for stiocism when we have numbweed."

[OOC:] Nerak loves to see Sudanna at work! :D

Nerak stands back and lets Sudanna work. She knows that this kind of bone injury requires the best, and that's Sudanna. She stands close enough to help, but far enough back to be out of Sudanna's working space, so as not to be in the way. She keeps an eye on what is happening, though, for future reference. She quickly checks the wheelchair to make sure it is in good working order. Ryana sighs softly, nodding. "I'll try. I'm just...it's so hard, I hate sitting still like this." She shrugs, frustrated already. "Three months, really? And pain-wise...well, it hurts off and on."

[OOC:] Sudanna says "It should hurt like nothing you ever felt before! But .. let's assume they kept you numbweeded..:>"

[OOC:] Ryana chuckles. "Assume she's lying...like she said, she doesn't want to be useless."

[OOC:] Sudanna says "Okay..:>"

Sudanna is sure it is 'off and on'. "Well let's start with re-wrapping the leg in new splints and fresh numbweed. And you must.." her voice is quite stern again.. stay off that leg. Unless you want to be crippled?" Danna senses only strong words will work on this girl. Fear sometimes keeping the patient down when all reason fails.

Nerak brings the supplies over from the cabinet... she's already prepared them after checking out the wheelchair, while Sudanna was looking at the leg. "Here, Sudanna. I brought the supplies we'll need." She sets them down on a clean towel on the cot and gets ready to help apply them.

[OOC:] Nerak says "I'm getting really tired... I'm going to have to pose out in a few minutes..."

Ryana turns pale at the thought of that, nodding slowly. "I guess you're right. I just hate being so useless." She sighs. "But crippled would be worse than just useless for a little while, I guess. Are you sure you two have time for this, though? I mean, I wouldn't want to keep you from anything."

Sudanna says, "And Nerak? After you have wrapped the leg, make sure Ryana has some of the herbal packets with comfrey." See, being a Sr. jman has advantages. "I think willowsalic, comfrey, and chamomile should do it." As she stands back to let the jman work, she rubs her eyes. "See us in a sevenday to get the leg looked at again, Ryana." "

[OOC:] Ryana smiles. "Thanks for the RP, Nerak."

Ryana nods to Sudanna. "All right. Thank you."

[OOC:] Sudanna says "I was setting myself up to leave as well.. Late here."

[OOC:] Sudanna says "But there is more to play here, Ryana. Morallen is a physical therapist/rehabilitationist. We can play this out for months!"

[OOC:] Ryana grins and nods. "I was thinking the same. If you guys are sure you don't mind."

[OOC:] Sudanna says "It's why we are here, Ryana..:>"

[OOC:] Ryana grins.

Nerak nods to Sudanna, "Alright, Sudanna." She begins to wrap Ryana's leg with numbweed soaked bandages. "These will harden as they dry. They will keep your leg stiffer than regular bandages, but since we want it completely immobilized, I am also going to splint it. Make sure you check it regularly, and you can come back at any time to get it re-wrapped." She finishes wrapping the leg, then helps the girl into the wheelchair, showing her how to use it. "You push the wheel with your arms - just the good one for now, and you can use your good leg to help push as well."

[OOC:] Nerak says "sorry, taht was the shortened version since I'm so tired... could have made that several poses..."

[OOC:] Sudanna says "Okay, I'm too beat to pose out.. just assume I did.. And more later, Ryana! Thanks for inviting me Nerak."

[OOC:] Nerak says "yep... you can milk this for /lots/ of RP, and we'll all be looking forward to it."

Ryana nods, sighing. "I'll try. Maybe I can find someone to help me get around in the chair. And thank you both for your help." She lowers herself into the chair, feeling the bandages stiffen as she sits still.

[OOC:] Ryana snuggles you both. "Thanks so much!"

[OOC:] Nerak says "you're welcome! it was fun. Ryana, I'm looking forward to more RP'ing... please look me up whenever you're online! it will be fun."

[OOC:] Ryana nods. "Definitely."

[OOC:] Nerak says "you're most welcome. "

Nerak grabs a few apprentices. "You three, please wheel this girl back to the herder hall, then come right back.. no dawdling. Ryana, come back in a week to see us again, if not sooner if you need us. We're just about always here, and you can ask for either of us. It was nice to meet you, and I hope we can get you up and moving well, as soon as possible... but remember... 3 months in the chair, at least you can move it around by yourself with your good arm and leg... and you can get others to push you."

[OOC:] Nerak now has to go... it's almost 1am here... and I hve to get up in, ummm, about 5 hours... :S

[OOC:] Nerak says "ok.. going... milk this for all it's worth! hhe... see you next time."

Ryana smiles softly, nodding. "I'll keep it in mind. Thank you again, so much, for your help."

[OOC:] Ryana giggles. "Plan to. Have fun!"
