Herbalry Class with Tyrin
You paged Tyrin with: Hiya kiddo. You interested in giving Rina a healer-type class, or at least RP'ing like we're having a class? I've been RP'ing that Rina has been having healerish classes with Tyrin and Dragonhealing type classes w/Kchiko... so you can pick! :)
From afar, Tyrin notes that Tyrin is very hands-on, so he won't hesitate to use a patient as a guinea pig. :D
You paged Tyrin with: s'ok w/me! :) I'm just looking for RP!
From afar, Tyrin ponders if Tyrin knows at all that Rina's taking lessons from his niece.
Rina walks into the infirmary carrying her riding helmet and trying to put the stray hairs back into her runner tail. She looks around and sees Tyrin there. "Hello Tyrin. You told me to come down for classes whenever I have some spare time between dragonhealing classes and my EMT squad runs. I got some extra time today. So... is is possible to get some healer classes? I know just showing up is rather inconvenient for you, but it's all I can do." She offers her healer mentor a smile.
Awake, Tyrin is moving about the infirmary with efficiency appropriate to a healer of his status; the senior journeyman weyrhealer orders around journeymen and apprentices alike to treat the wounded and sick, of which there are a fair bit today in the infirmary - about ten whiny patients with relatively minor injuries. Busy day, indeed. "... Ilynne, you're good with all things gastric, go help out that moaning young man over there," he commands, then goes to shoo an apprentice towards the cabinets with an order of "Get out some more numbweed, Milaros, the jar's running low - oh, hello, Rina." He's glad to get a break from the hustle and bustle of ordering around. "Let's see.... is there anything in particular you would like me to teach you today? I think we've covered basic first aid, bit of simple surgery, and birthing... Oh, yes, I have just the idea. Do you know much about your herbs?"
Rina looks around, watching the various apprentices doing the chores that they were set out to do. She wonders if she's getting special treatment not having the appy chores, even though she has reached Sr. appy rank at this point, and almost done with her classes! "Herbs, yes, I think that would be good. If possible, can we discuss how they apply to both humans and dragons? I mean, if I"m taking both human and dragon healing classes, I'd like to learn how what I"m doing affects both... if possible. I know your knowledge is more human than draconic, and K'chiko's is more the other way... but I'd like to know as much as possible!" She grins, pulling a notebook out of her riding jacket pocket. This notebook is well used - having human and dragon healing notes all throughout the pages. It looks like it is well referenced too.
"I'll speak a bit about herbs to you, but you won't be using that notebook much, trust me." Tyrin grins at the greenrider. "Herbs are plants, as you probably well know; the ones we utilize have medicinal properties. It's rather ineffective to try to treat without the use of herbs, but unless you know your herbs, what you give your patient with the intention of helping them might be fatal." Tyrin nods. "There are three main parts to the study of herbs: cultivation, preparation and administering, and the properties of the herbs themselves. Now what we'll be doing today is reviewing some basic herbal knowledge (if you don't specialize in herbalry you don't need to know any more than this) and some of Pern's most commonly-used treatments and how to prepare them - you can study other herbs in your spare time."
Rina keeps out her notebook, because she takes a lot of notes - she's just that kind of person. She does, though, make sure to keep her pen inside the book and not in her hand, poised to write. As she listens to Tyrin talk about herbs, she nods. "Yes, that makes sense. I know of some of the herbs, but not all. Oh, I know that some of the herbs that are used on humans are fatal to dragons.. but for the life of me, I can't remember what they are!" She starts to thumb through her notebook to see where she has written them, though can't find them. She mutters, "I really need to re-organize this notebook..." She grins up at Tyrin. "Yes, I do plan on doing more studying on my own time... I"ve been reading books in our Telgar infirmary." She realizes she should shut up and listen to the teacher at this point...
"Fellis is the best-known one. Just a little of it kills dragonkind - good. You should chat with Sirah or Andraya; they're journeyman and senior journeyman, respectively. I forgot who they sent as the new weyrhealer, because I'm aware Riyan left." Tyrin nods. "Before we get to the hands-on, I have a bit of vocabulary for you. An alterative preparation restores the natural health of the body and is our most holistic herbal preparation, usually given to those who are extremely sick but treatable as a supplement to other herbs, or to those already healthy to give them further invigoration. Anesthetics such as numbweed numb. There is another class known as analgesics which does not entirely numb an affected area, but it lessens pain. Antiseptics cleanse and prevent infection. Astringents constrict and bind where they are applied - they're useful for stopping bleeding, pus, and swelling. Carminatives help with stomach problems. Diuretics and diaphoretics rid the body of excess fluids; the former by urination, the latter by sweating. Emetics induce vomiting, and they're useful in cases of poisoning. Expectorants produce and expel mucus from the lungs and help with coughs; febrifuges reduce fever." Somebody knows his herbs - he's got to, after nearly twenty Turns in the profession and nearly ten Turns in this particular infirmary. "Hemostatics stop bleeding, and laxatives - well, you know what those are for. Narcotics are painkillers and sedatives; these can be particularly dangerous and addictive, and fellis is our most widely used narcotic." He grows a bit solemn for a moment before recollecting his thoughts and taking a breath. "This infirmary's categorized by type of herb, you see, so these aren't too hard to remember."
Rina writes at mad speeds to try to keep up with Tyrin's thoughts, even though he says they are easy. "Oh yes, sir. That all makes sense, though I didn't know some of those words, so I'm writing them down so I can remember then for the future." She just writes the vocabulary words as he talks. "Yes. Oh, that's what they're called!" She finishes writing the terms down and looks back up to the elder healer. "Yes, not too hard once you know your vocabulary." Which she admits she knew about half of them. Ah... Fellis. I knew I had learned it, but it's a good thing I never get near it... I had forgotten that Fellis is not for dragons, though this reminds me that there is a sign hanging in the infirmary at Telgar saying no Fellis allowed.. I should have remembered that!"
Tyrin continues after collecting his thoughts a bit. "Sedatives quiet the nervous system and calm down a body; they may cause sleep, and some stronger sedatives are addictive. Conversely, stimulants excite the body; these can also be addictive. Tonics strengthen and stimulate rather than treat the body. Lastly, vulneraries such as comfrey promote bodily repair, useful in such injuries as breaks, bruises, and cuts." He looks toward the cabinet. "Step up with me towards the cabinet, if you would, Rina? ... don't mind the apprentices running around. Milaros, didn't I tell you to refill the numbweed?!" Le sigh. "In the dragon infirmary? I'm aware they have one, but I didn't know they had a sign - probably my niece or one of the other dragonhealers tacked it up." Shrug. "But, yes, I'm going to teach you how to prepare herbs now."
Rina continues to scribble information as fast as she can to keep up with the Sr. Journeyman. "Ah, stimulants like klah... Addictive? Hmm, that's why I always grab a mug first thing in the morning!" She chuckles as she continues to write. As Tyrin calls her to follow him, she finishes scribbling and stands up, following him towards the cabinet. She grins as he mentions getting her hands on the herbs themselves! "Yes, the sign looks as if it was made by someone as a reminder, but it's kind of cute - has a dragon holding a bottle of fellis and a red X going through the picture. Good, I"m ready sir!" Yep, ready to play with the herbs!
"Alright. There are a few extremely common preparations for herbs I'm going to teach you now; these are decoctions and infusions - basically, herbal teas for different sorts of herbs, then salves, oils, poultices, pills (which are not terribly common but have a good shelf life, mind you), compresses, syrups, and fomentations. First we're going to attack the teas. Do you like chamomile tea, Rina?" Tyrin ponders. "Perhaps we can make an infusion of that for you to drink." He reaches up into the cabinet and takes out a jar of whole chamomile and a jar of witch-hazel. "We're going to make a chamomile infusion and a witch-hazel decoction, now."
Rina nods as she watches the man as he gets things ready. "Yes, I do love to drink teas, as well as klah." She chuckles. "Chamomille and witch-hazel ... what will that do to me?" She wonders if he's going to make her drink something that will end up having... reprocussions... as she betweens back home.
"Oh, no worries, I'm not making you drink the witch-hazel. Chamomile is delicious, though, and it calms you down a bit. Helps with skin and gastric problems." Tyrin chuckles, but stops. "... wait, we need the dried chamomile. Well. That can be dealt with." He reaches up and grabs another jar. "Take a spoonful of this," he tells Rina, presenting her with a spoon, "and put it in this cup," he adds, presenting her with a teacup. "Then, take some of this," he commands next, presenting her with a waterskin, "and boil that in the hearth outside in the caverns."
Interesed in what she is doing, Rina takes the spoonful of chamomile and puts it in the cup that has been specified. She then follows the directions, leaves the infirmary with the waterskin and boils said water in the hearth from the other room. When she returns with the kettle, she then waits to hear that she is to pour the boiling water in the teacup with the herbs, but she dares not do it without knowing exactly how much to put in. "Ok, I boiled the water, here it is. So, I just add it in here?"
"Fill the cup to the top and let it sit about... oh, fifteen minutes to get it all steeped." Tyrin grins. "You do the same thing for decoctions, pretty much. While that sits, we're going to make a salve. You'll get a pretty good arm workout." He takes out another, slightly smaller jar of aloe oil. "You have to prepare an oil for this, which is done by steeping as much herb as you can shove in a jar in a large amount of oil for about a month. Since that takes too long, we'll start with some aloe oil. Now you take some warm, melted fat which is solid at room temperature. Start by pouring the oil on the melted fat and stirring. Gradually, the salve will solidify; you want to get it as stirred-in as possible while it's liquid." He prepares a setup and lets Rina prepare the aloe salve. "Aloe's good for burns - vital to have a good supply of this around here, with the amount of sunburns people incur."
Rina does as she's told and fills the teacup with the steaming water, sets a lid on the teacup and lets the tea steep. "Done." Then watches as Tyrin pulls out the aloe oil jar. "for a whole month? Wow, that takes quite a while to prepare..." She takes the oil and the warm fat and stirs. While stirring, she turns back to the man and tilts her head, "I know that Aloe is good for burns, but why use it when we have numbweed? Isn't numbweed better for burns?"
"Numbweed doesn't treat at all, Rina. It simply numbs, and too much of it can cause bleeding or scarring." Tyrin shakes his head as he watches her. "Aloe has actual burn healing properties. Hence, why we use /that/." He stretches and looks towards the patients. "Ah, looks like Xavare is having problems setting that bone." Proceeding over, he checks that numbweed has been applied, and then assists the journeyman in pulling and setting the bone. "There we go, Xav. -- Start working out a little more, mind?"
Rina nods her head, "Ohhh, I see. That makes sense." She continues stirring the oil and fat mixture, which is getting harder to stir now that it is cooling. "I think this is about done, and the tea as well." She stirs with one hand and peeks at the steeping tea with the other. "Yep, looks done-ish to me." Grinning, she watches to see what the other healers around the room are doing. She pales a little as she watches the bone tug-of-war that is going on behind her and turns her head quickly away.
OOC: Rina says "actually, I need to get going now... but I'll be on later. See ya later, dear! :)"
[Pern] Rina: gotta go... see ya all later. :D
Thanks for coming to Dragons' Dusk. Come back soon!
