Logfile from Nerak

Erik's frown deepens as he runs a hand through ruffled hair, messing it even more. "Class!" he calls again, this time a bit more sharply. "Come now.. we are trying to have a lesson, we are." Musuko and Kiriya get a stare before the journeyman straightens his shoulders and draws in a deep breath. "We are /here/ to learn about the basics of our Hall. Very important, that is. So who can tell me what healing is about?"

Nerak takes out her notebook and turns to the next blank page. She titles it "Hall Basics".

Musuko nods her approval to Kiri, and raises her hand.

Nerak raises her hand

Erik waves a hand through the air, dismissing their raised ones. "Just answer, that is, just answer. Much easier. Go right ahead."

Kasien glances around, and pulls out her own notebook-- it's not one particularly for this, of course. More less of one she simply write in. It'll do until she can get a fresh one. She titles it, and keeps her hand down- she knows, somewhat, but is still unsure.

Musuko says, "We help people who are hurt, or are having a baby. and we supply herbs to those that need them."

Nerak "We also give physicals and help to keep people healthy as much as possible."

Kasien adds, after a moment, "We heal people. And advise them, I believe. And generally care for them..." her tones fades out.

Musuko nods to Kaisen. "We also help animals. Like Dragons, and Dolphins, and herderbeasts, and other pets."

Kerali quietly tiptoes in and sits behind the class. She waves to those she knows, and grins at those she doesn't.

Musuko nods to Kerali, and takes some notes.

Erik's eyes fix triumphantly on Kasien, and he jabs a finger toward the girl. "You! Yes. You've found the thing we most often forget, you have. Yes, we help those who are hurt.. we heal, so to say - we help people get well. But we also deal with troubles of the mind. That's what mindhealing is, indeed. Mindhealing. We deal with all aspects of health, we do." He pauses, scanning the room swiftly. "So. If our job is to heal those who need it, what is the first rule of our Hall?"

Nerak "Never to Hurt anyone?"

Kasien can't help but hold back a wide grin as she scribbles furiously in her notebook. She pauses with the rule part, attentive.

Kiriya hesitates to raise her hand, waiting for an apprentice who is taking this class for credit...

Nerak writes the information about healing.... those hurt.... mindhealing... rules... ok, got it.

Erik frowns as the apprentices.. scribble? "Come now.. surely more of you have a guess? What is our first rule? You should all know this - it's very important, it is!"

Kiriya raises her hand. Let's step in now...

Musuko says, "Help those in pain?"

Kasien suggests, "Never ignore those in need?"

Nerak concentrates, "listen to your teachers?"

Kiriya blurts, "Do no harm!" There, she got it out of her system.

The last gets a faint smile from Erik, and he moves around the desk to slide into a seat. Fingers clasp each other, and elbows prop themselves on the desk before he speaks. "All are very good things to keep in mind.. but yours it the closest to correct," he intones, jabbing a finger toward Nerak before folding his hands again. His head tilts toward Kiriya, and he nods. "Tell me, Apprentice - do you know?"

Kasien turns her head toward Kiriya, eyes amused at her burst.

Musuko smiles, but keeps her attention on the teacher.

Erik nods swiftly, head bobbing with a sudden jerk. "Exactly!" he exclaims, fingers now spreading across the desktop. "To do no harm." The rule is repeated with a sort of hushed reverence as his eyes scan the classroom, watching to be sure they're all taking that in. "Who knows why a rule that sounds so simple - easy to follow, that is - can be such a difficult task?"

Nerak writes "To do no harm"... like in the oaths, I remember now. Just forgot the wording... "Because all of our energies are supposed to go toward healing, and if we hurt someone, we just have another person to heal?"

Kasien writes the 'golden rule' down in large print. She nibbles on her bottom lip in thought- indeed seemingly easy, but she takes it for the teacher's word that it can be a difficult task.

Musuko says, "Because as a healer, we should not hurt someone because we may have to end up healing them, and they might be mad, and hurt you back!"

Kasien blinks, and says quietly, "It's easy to harm someone if you don't know what you're doing. In that way, it could be a hard rule.."

Kiriya says, almost quietly, which is /much/ unlike her in reality, "Because while healing them, you may inadvertently harm them."

Nerak thinks "Because, you want to be able to have everyone have confidence that all healers will not hurt anyone, as a rule, so they will always be able to trust a healer."

Erik nods slowly. "Good reasons, yes. Indeed. Reasons we have the rule. But what I'm asking is why it might be hard to follow." His eyes flit toward Kasien who gets a small, pleased smile, and a nod. "Indeed, indeed. It's not always possible to avoid /hurting/ someone - even if you are healing properly. Setting a bone hurts. But harm, as it is, harm can be avoided so long as you know what you're doing. Now. Who can tell me why else it may be difficult to avoid harm, as it is?"

You say, "If you try to heal beyond your teaching, you may inadvertantly cause harm, which is why you should never try anything until you have learned it in a class, and have been checked out by the instructor.""

Musuko says, "Because if someone is hurt, and in need of moving (in danger if they're not moved), you need to move them even if it hurts them."

Erik nods once more, though he's still frowning faintly. "Yes, quite right, quite right. But tell me.. is there ever a time when you may not /want/ to follow the rule? Anyone?" His eyes rake the classroom, settling on the silent ones.

Kasien says slowly, "In a situation when one is threatened- say, someone hurt you, and you have and urge to do something back? Something that's not necessarily a time when one is trying to aid or cure someone. Just... daily life?" At that, she only hopes she's not trying to say she would be the vindictive type.

You say, "How about when you are being attacked for any reason, like self defense?""

Musuko says, "If a patient is asking for something he shouldn't have, and you just want to knock him out?"

Erik nods once, shortly, and glances at Kasien before launching into a speil that's obviously been repeated many a time. "It's not always possible not to hurt. Of course not. But to harm - that we can avoid. Yes, indeed, though it's not easy, not at all. Sometimes we want to hurt others. Sometimes we want to react, or defend. But so far as you can, you should never, ever, harm another. It is contrary to everything a healer is. It is up to /you/ to maintain this." He pauses, staring at the class. "The HealerHall has two other major rules. The first is that you do not drink while an apprentice. The second is that you do not have relationships while an apprentice. Both of these are easy to understand, and there is no reason that they should be broken." His gaze rakes the gathered apprentices again before he pauses.

Musuko scribbles down some notes, hoping she'll be able to read them later.

Kasien adds the next rules in smaller print underneath the first. She never liked wine anyway. As for relationships-- no, she hadn't had any of those yet. easy rules, yup.

Erik continues with only a brief pause. "The reasoning is very simply. As an apprentice, you have no time for a realationship. And as a healer, you must always be ready to help at a moment's notice. If you have been drinking, you cannot do that, indeed. While drinking is allowed when you are promoted to Journeyman, it is still discouraged. Indeed. As a healer, you need to have your wits about you, because in this craft, it's people's lives that are at stake."

Nerak begins to write the information down. Ok, no alcohol, no relationships. I can remember that....

Kasien glances up at the other apprentices, judging their reactions. These rules weren't so tough. Were they? Her gaze rests on Nerak, and she smiles. Nope, musn't be..

Musuko thinks no relationships, no problem there, no drinking, and writes down the information.

Nerak thinks these rules make perfect sense, once you think about it! Noone would trust a drunk Healer!

"One thing to remember at all times is that you wear the healer knot on your shoulder. That means that wherever you go, you're representing the Hall. Act accordingly," Erik begins, eyeing the apprentices appraisingly. "Journeymen and Masters should be addressed appropriately - Use their name and title, or craft and title. For dragonriders, you should address them as bluerider Cayl, weyrleader, weyrwoman.. whatever happens to be appropriate for that 'rider. For holders, Lady and Lord Holder would be correct. And for any of these... sir or m'am." He nods once, letting the instructions sink in.

Nerak writes this down, this information would have been better known earlier, so she wouldn't have embarrassed herself....

Once more, the class is scanned. "Who can list for me some traits that are important in a healer? If you have one, feel free to simply call it out, please," Erik notes.

Nerak "trustworthy"

Kasien is a the near end of her notebook pages, and adds the name and title information at the bottom. "Patient," she clals out, not looking up.

Musuko says, "kindness"

Kasien suggests, "Understanding."

You say, "Good bedside mannor - so the patient will feel comfortable with you""

Erik nods. "All very good.. as are knowledge, respect, and caring... what about attention to details. Why might that be important?"

Kasien flips the other side of her paper. "Little things can be big problems," she comments.

You say, "for diagnosing the patients problems!"

Musuko says, "To notice the severity of the injury"

Erik nods once, then stands. "Indeed. You must be very aware of your surroundings as a healer. Now. Do I have any questions?"

You say, "Can you tell us more about the projects? Jman and master?"

Musuko says, "Nope, that about covers it for me."

Kasien shakes her head, though anticipating the answer to Nerak's question.

Erik frowns slightly, eyeing Nerak. "You will be required to do a project to become a Journeyman, but these vary widely. You are better off discussing that with your mentor. Indeed."

Stratus *gives a quick run through of dealing with patients. In my opinion, healing RP is some of the /best/ you'll get. I love treating patients - so I'd suggest that you jump on an opportunity when you get one. ;) The irritating thing about healing is that people don't usually bother to ask in advance. They just slice their leg off and then page you asking if you can come treat them. S'perfectly ok to respond to that if you're not busy - but I usually try to politely let them know that we like to be asked /before/ the injury.

Stratus * And if you're busy, don't feel bad about turning them down. Other important thing - try to be sure you know what you're doing. Logs abound in plenty around here so use them. Narali has a /fabulous/ herbal up on the page and here in @lib. And there's usually a channel full of healers who'll help you out - so ask! We don't bite. Much ;) Also - I'm a bit obssessive, but there have been many times when I've simply searched the web for herbal info on how to treat this and that.

Stratus **** and important! **** apprentices can't give /anything/.. not even tea... without supervision. Sr apps can do small bits of healing without supervision

Stratus *any questions, OOC or otherwise, on anything hall related at all?

Stratus *erks and sticks this in here... . Oh - make sure you know what the patient wants and that it's IC. They can't request appendicitus, for example - it'd kill them. Communicate with your patient OOCly, let them know what's going on, ect, ect. And use common sense - Pern healing especially is a lot of what seems right. ;)

Stratus *shakes her head. Not without supervision. Though for that, I'd say you're welcome to emit a Jman. But ICly, you wouldn't be allowed.

Mosiah bustles into the room, one arm percariosly bracing quite a few hides against his chest while the other arm supports a bulky jar. Head bobs now and again to the students about as Moe does his best busy J'man impression. "'Lo. 'Lo." He glances up to the instructor present, lips just begging to slip into a grin, but held well in check. " Good students, I trust?" He finally makes the front, where his bundles are spilled onto the table and he now allows his smile to erupt.

Kerali nods to the Healer J-man as he bustles in. "'Lo. I'm Healer Appy Kerali." She breaks into a grin before settling herself in her chair, snugging her shawl around her shoulders, and grabbing her stylus. She delicately scribes the word /Emergency Surgery/ on the page, and underlines it.

Erik rises, lips pursing together as he notes Mosiah's entrance. His question remains unanwered as he gathers his hides, dropping a few here and there, and then scurries out the back of the room.
