Logfile from Nerak

[Healer] Sudanna: okay.. I'll meet anyone who wants the class in the classroom..:>

Sudanna walks in from the Journeymen and Masters Hall.

[Healer] Nerak: where is the class? I'll sit in for a while, but if I get kicked off again... I'm not going to even try getting back on, so I'll say goodnight now, just in case!

[Healer] Sudanna: IH classroom... A new place for me..:>

Miralwyn, Amabel, and Shandria are here.

Sudanna walks in from the Healer Center.

Sudanna bustles in, arms full of all sorts of interesting things.. and secrets the box of 'stuff' behind the desk. "Good day apprentices.. How are you all doing?"

OOC: Sudanna says "Before we start.. I like/insist on attention. Be active, ask questions.. make /sure/ you understand it. I don't give credit for someone who idles."

Miralwyn had been silently eying the myriad contents of the classroom, oblivious to others arriving. So it's more than a little bit of a jump that she overhears Sudanna's greeting. "Oooh! Going well, Journeywoman."

Amabel walks into the classroom and quietly seats herself at a desk, notebook opening to a fresh page. "G'day Journeywoman Sudanna," she murmurs, eyes briefly moving from the journeywoman to her fellow apprentices before they rest of the page she is currently titling.

Shandria walks over to sit in a chair after giving a respectful curtsey to Sudanna. "Abit tired but well."

You paged Sudanna with: Nerak pages, "need a guinea pig? I've had the class before..."

Sudanna pages, "We'll see.. I'll remember the offer.. Thanks."

Nerak walks to the back of the room, she has taken the class before, and just likes to listen in, to make sure she still remembers everything.

You paged Sudanna with: Nerak pages, "that is if my connection is nice to me! :)"

Sudanna says, "To those of you who don't know me, I am Journeywoman Sudanna, currently posted here with the Hall. Although I specialize in midwifery and bonehealing, I /am/ qualified to teach all the basic hall courses. This is First Aid 1. Any questions before we start? Oh, and feel free to grab mugs of klah.. I want you alert."

Miralwyn murmurs a "Well met" under her breath, more habit than anything else, before the mention of klah perks her interest, and she slips over to aquire a mug, before re-settling in her seat. Questions? Her head's still spinning from joining, so she'll just keep quiet. For the moment.

Shandria grins a bit before she gets up and quietly goes to get a cup of klah and then returns to her seat. She blows on the hot contents of the mug and then opens her notebook. She flips a couple of pages and then settles the klah down next to the notebook taking a writing utensil in hand.

Amabel looks up from titling her page, 'First Aid I' neatly written at the top. Ama can take notes, yes she can. Apprentice smiles at Sudanna, nodding slightly. "No questions. And I'll take you up on that klah..." She moves gracefully the pot, helping herself to a full mug of klah. Never mind the fact that she just had a mug about a candlemark ago. You can never have too much klah, right?

Sudanna says, "Who can tell me what First Aid is all about?" Jumping right into the class. "Anyone care to try?"

Amabel *wonders...do you want us to raise our hands?

Sudanna Nope, just answer..

Amabel *noddles, just checking. :)

Oooh, an answer she actually knows. A slight stirring from Miralwyn's corner of the room, the grey eyed girl raising a slight hand. "It's... The healing that's done right away?" she offers. "When someone's hurt, I mean. Right away." Not perfectly coherent, but a start, right?

Shandria blushes a bit and wiggles in her chair uneasily. "Um, what you do to help someone first when in trouble....? Maybe?" She mutters a bit confused. There's no guarantees, but Amabel will try. "I guess...treating unexpected injuries?" And injuries are usually unexpected. Ahem. "The smaller ones anyway, I guess." Hey, she tried.

Sudanna says, "Exactly.. it is often the first healing that occurs in a medical emergency. And although you all know.." eyes each apprentice. "that you do not /normally/ treat any patient, this is the sort of healing that you may be called upon to do in emergency circumstances."

Sudanna says, "Now, what we are covering here are the /non life-threatening/ emergency situations. As always if it's life threatening, you job is to get a qualified ranked healer. so.. what are /non/ life-threatening injuries that may need immediate care?"

Miralwyn drums her fingers on her klah mug. "A burn?" she offers, fingering at an old scar on her wrist. "Unless it's really bad, it's not life threatening, but you don't want to just leave it..."

Shandria brightens up a bit as she takes a sip of her klah and says "A real bad cut or a broken bone." She scribbles furiously in her notebook.

Sudanna nods to both girls.. "Good answers, and yes, burns, bad cuts or broken bones are all non-threatening but immediate care concerns. any others?"

Amabel nods and right that down. First and non life-threatening injuries. She looks back up at the journeywoman, racking her brain for ideas. "Score. Well, it can be life-threatening, but not always..."

Nerak grins in the back of the room, thinking of the man on the beach the other day trying to impress a woman, who was juggling with knives, missed and required 7 stitches... definately knife wounds...

Miralwyn shakes her head. "Unless you're a 'rider, Score kills you real quick. But... What about someone who's gone and gotten themselves knocked out. Fall from a runnerbeast or something."

Sudanna says, "We don't tend to treat scoring as a First aid concern. That sort of thing is almost always prepared for. But if we have time, we will touch on it.. There is a second class that covers more detailed and serious emergencies. Let's start with cuts and scrapes. What happens if a child is brought in with a scarped knee? lightly cut, some bleeding?"

Shandria looks around the room and then focuses back on Sudanna. "Well first I would clean it. And then bandage it?" She twirls a strand of hair in her fingers.

Sudanna says, "How would you clean it?"

Amabel nods, writing the heading 'Cuts and Scrapes' in her notebook. She looks up at the sound of a question, biting on her lower lip in thought. "Clean it first, with redwort? And then apply pressure if it's still bleeding..."

Nerak thinks 'clean with redwort, then bandage.' Also a good idea to kiss the boo-boo (if it's your child!)...

Miralwyn twirls a strand of hair around her fingertip. "Wouldn't you possibly also want to put some numbweed on it?" she muses. "Kiddies shouldn't have to deal with pain if they don't have to. Even little bits of it."

Sudanna says, "Always use redwort.. and yes, pressure if it's bleeding, and since it's a child offer a sweetstick. Numbweed for a simple scrape? no, children are pretty resilient and I like to keep it simple for a simple cut."

Miralwyn nods, a slight flush coming to her cheeks as she lowers her head down to her notebook, and carefully writing that down.

Amabel nods as she scribbles something about redwort, applying pressure, and a sweetstick for a child in her notebook. Got it. Dark eyes turn back to Sudanna, ready for more questions and notes.

Shandria writes on the first line of her page. 'Minor cuts/scrapes: Clean with redwort, Pressure if bleeding persists. And love!' She puts a little stick girl with a smile and candies in a sack in her hand. She continues to doodle unaware her attention has faltered a tad.

Sudanna says, "Now, what if it's a more serious cut? what about a baker appy who sliced a finger while cutting redfruit for a bubbly?" Glances back to her trove of treasures in the box she hustled in. "any ideas what we do then?"

Amabel leans back in her seat slightly, clearly in thought. "Well...the application of pressure still applies. It's most important to get the bleeding to stop first, right?" Bleeding that doesn't stop can be a /very/ bad thing...

Sudanna says, "Bleeding must be stopped, but what else do we do?" Reaching behind her she pulls out orangefruit and begins tossing them to the apprentices..." Now, you will note that each fruit has been cut.. and these.. " Pulls out needles and thread.. "Go with the fruit." Distributes one to each student. Understand now?"

Shandria is a bit startled as an orangefruit ends up right on top of her doodling bringing her effectively back to the real world. She takes the offered needle with it's attaced thread. "Oh suturing." She raises an eyebrow at the objects in her hands.

Miralwyn plucks her orangefruit from the air, and eyes it with interest, taking the needle and thread with a smile. Now /this/ is getting interesting. Ex weyrbrat focuses her attention back on Sudanna, waiting for instruction on how to proceed.

Amabel gets it now. Her mouth moves into a slight 'O' as she examines the orangefruit, taking the needle in the other hand and looking back up at the journeywoman. This could be fun...

Sudanna says, "First, thread your needle, then place a small knot in the end. Remeber, this is a person.. and each stitch is supposed to be as small as possible without being too small." Holds up her own fruit with it's pre-stitched row of xxxxx's . "There, like this."

Miralwyn cranes her neck to peer at the Example Orange. "A person, right..." she nods, quietly to herself, before lowering the orangefruit, and setting about attempting to thread the needle. A few clumsy attempts before she manages it, a flush creeping up on her cheeks as she's /sure/ that everyone's noticed. The knot is accomplished much more easily, however. Fortunately for her ego, in any case.

Amabel nods, mentally taking note of Sudanna's instructions. She'll write them down when she's done. Eager to begin, she sets the orangefruit down. Apprenticely easily threads the needle, but has a bit more trouble when she attempts to tie an itsy-bitsy knot at the end. Face twisted in frustration as she drops one end of the string, she tries again and is successful. Then she neatly begins to stitch. This isn't too bad...she'd had to do all of the basic sewing when she was back at home.

Shandria threads her needle ending the thread with a knot. She then jabs her needle into the fruit and then winces as she realizes that a real person would probably scream if she did that. She makes a knot and then takes a breath and looks around at the other students. Seeing a gentler approch she hesitate, uneasy about next stich.

Sudanna says, "I think Shandria might have hit on an important issue here... I know we don't need to prepare a fruit, but before stitching, what do you need to do to a person?"

Miralwyn gently eases the needle into the skin of the orange, having been paying attention to the others' efforts on some level or another. Hesitantly, the first 'x' is formed, and then she glances back up at Sudanna's words. "Numbweed?" she queries. Perhaps this time she'll get it right.

Sudanna says, "Do any of you rememebr the rules of numbweed?" Sudanna *we need to pick up the speed of the class.. it's a long one.. so I am gonna pose in blocks of info..:>

Rules of numbweed? Miralwyn is still learning the Apprentice rules. So she places the orange on the table, and pulls out her notebook.

Amabel looks up from her fruit at the journeywoman's question. She's taken herbalry, she should know this. Numbweed... "Well, you use it small amounts..." Sigh. It's been awhile.

Sudanna says, "You all look like you're doing well... you want to make the stitches small enough to keep the wound together, but keep them neat so they'll come out easily...you can set the orangefruits aside for now, and save them for a snack when class is over." She turns to face the class as she reaches the front. "Now, let's say that you come upon someone who's just fallen out of a tree..." She grins, her gaze narrowing on Nerak. " If you'd just happened to see Sr. Apprentice Nerak fall from a tree, what would be some things you would be worried about?"

"A concussion?" says a quiet voice belonging to Miralwyn.

Shandria sqirms a bit "A broken bone?" she sqirms a bit in her seat as Li'l Lord sends a image of eggs in her head. A quite resigned sigh issues from the petite girl.

Nerak slumps in her seat, as if pretending she fell out of a tree... with a dazed look on her face (which is not entirely uncommon! :)

Sudanna says, "Yes, concussion and or broken bones... so who knows how to tell about a concussion?"

Miralwyn has been a good little apprentice, and has been reading her lessons. "Their eyes? The pupils will be all... funny." So, not so much reading as skimming. It's a start.

Shandria frowns to herself slightly "Um...well going unconcious or maybe unfocased eyes?" She sips at her klah and then fingers the mug as she looks to the journeywoman.

Sudanna *Ooops, concussion is not in FA1.. let's skip to broken bones.. *sigh*

Jathen walks briskly in from the Healer Center.

Sudanna says, "Ahh, apprentices, may I introduce Sr. Journeyman Jathen.. mindhealer. Jathen, the newest apprentices."

Sudanna *just about to deal with broken bones. And Jathen is here now..:>

Jathen appears in the doorway of the classroom, his eyes shadowed, his coak flowing about his ankles. He raises a brow looking from the students, to their teacher and back again. Odd lot...except for the teacher... He gives the students a cool look before he saunters to the back of the classroom to take a seat, "They look...nice..." Somehow this man just made the word 'nice' into some kind of a curse work. How? We don't know. We have the research department on it right now...

OOC: Jathen says "coak = coat"

OOC: Jathen frowns.... work = word

OOC: Jathen says "Forgive the typos. It's been...an interesting day."

Shandria straightens up in her chair and nods a respectful greeting. "Journeyman Jathen." She figits a bit under his scrutiny not sure how to proceed she turns her attention back to Sudanna.

Sudanna *Senior Jman..:> (He's way too picky..:>)

You paged Jathen with: Nerak pages, "I had a /lot/ of typos earlier - have you ever logged on in Telnet? You can't change typing mistakes in that! Was on a co-worker's machine..."

Nerak already sitting in the back of the room, shrinks lower into her seat as Journeyman Jathan walks by. She doesn't want to get on his bad side at all, she remembers what he does if he gets mad!

Sudanna says, "So, students.. how would you recognize a broken limb?" Waits patiently, letting the appies settle back after the healer/husband's entrance. A thought given to where the girls must be.. "Any ideas at all?"

Miralwyn bobs her head politely at the latest ranker on the scene. Her near-reflexive greeting of 'Senior Journeyman, sir' is silenced at his tone. Hrm. Interesting character this one looks to be. Grey eyes peer curiously at him, before snapping back down to focus very intently on her notebook.

Amabel sits up slightly and sends a smile towards the newest arrival. "G'day, Sr. Journeyman Jathen." Eyes then turn back to the journeywoman, perking slightly at the sound of a question. "Well..." She's guessing here, but she'll try. "I'd imagine you'd look for swelling, any bones that are sticking out slightly...and the patient would be in an excruciating amount of pain."

Sudanna says, "Good.. But not all broken bones 'stick out', but all do hurt tremendously. The patient will most likely be in extreme pain, and you should be able to feel the break through the skin. You'll want to /carefully/ feel for the break. Occasionally, the break will go through the skin - a compound fracture. What to do in that case will be covered in First Aid II. What would we do in the case of a simple fracture - a break that doesn't go through the skin?"

Miralwyn skims through her notebook in a quiet flurry of turning pages, before glancing up. "You'd want to be sure that the bones were lined up properly?" she hazards.

Shandria says "Confine it somehow so the break doesn't get worse?" She picks up her writing tool and then lets it slide down her fingers to tap lightly on her notebook. She does this repeatedly but quietly. A sign of her uneasyness for some unknown reason.

Amabel scribbles down the bit about excruciating pain and looks back up. "Use some sort of splint or bandage to keep it in place? And maybe numbweed to help the pain?" If that's possible.

Sudanna says, "Right.. First gently run your hand over the limb to make sure you know exactly where the break is.. then slather the area with numbweed. Even with the 'weed' it will hurt! Once you have located the break the procedure is simple.. play a sort of 'tug-of-war' with the limb. The bone should 'snap' back into place. Then you will need to use splints to secure the limb."

Sudanna says, "What can you think to use for splints? Remeber this is an emergency situation."

Miralwyn nods at each point, scribbling them down in a mostly legible, if far from neat, hand. "Locate... numbweed... tug-of-war... splints." Check. All filed away. "Any long piece of wood or anything else that's mostly straight?" she muses.

Shandria brightens up as her imagination takes flight. "A treebranch and maybe some strips of cloth from a coat or a tunic."

Jathen isn't going to answer but he is toying with the idea of using the bones from the people already dead on the victum that needs treatment, but then decides it's against ethics... Oh well....

Amabel can't help cringing. That sounds incredible painful for the poor patient. Appy takes notes of the numbweed and 'tug-of-war' and looks back up. She bits her lower lip again in thought. "Splints..." Be creative, Ama. "Well, if you have a really long cloth you could use that and wrap it, I guess..." So much for creativity.

Miralwyn ponders furthur. "Maybe... arrow shafts? If you were on a hunting trip or something. They'd do for a broken arm..."

Sudanna says, "any of those sound quite acceptable. The main thing is to immobilise the broken limb as soon and as securely as possible until you can get back to an infirmary." Sudanna says, "Alright, so there was a broken limb, what else could Sr. Apprentice Nerak have done to herself?"

Shandria finishes her mug of Klah and then says "Cuts, scrapes, bruses, maybe some knocked out teeth?"

Jathen raises a brow at the question and takes a knife from his cross strap and starts cleaning his nails idly with the presumably sharp and deadly object...okay...forget the presumably bit...

Sudanna says, "well, we have covered scrapes and cuts.. so let's consider bruises.. Any ideas what to do?"

Shandria ponders for a bit "numbweed is all I can think of."

Amabel draws a squiggly line and titles the new section 'Bruises'. She looks back up, thinking. "Well...usually they're not that bad, but if they are, I'd have to agree with numbweed."

Sudanna says, "You don't really wnat to use numbweed for everything guys. If it's a bone bruise, we recommend a cup of willowsalic and to keep off the bruised area."

Shandria scribbles notes one after the other in her notebook as she mutters quietly to herself "Really have to take that Herbal class." She frowns a bit and then shakes her head.

Nerak *getting late here, heading to bed. Goodnight all!
