Logfile from Nerak.

[Healer Chat] Alain: Hiya boss-man.

[Healer Chat] Nerak: wow... what a welcome...

[Healer Chat] Alain: Suuuure, I don't count?

[Healer Chat] Nerak: hehe. yes, dear, you do!~ hehe I connected, and N'ano left... but Alain makes up for it! hehe

[Healer Chat] Alain facedesks. "What my boyfriend would say if he could just hear that..."

[Healer Chat] Nerak: hehe... oh yes... what /would/ he say? ;)

Anyone know - is Guard FA I different from Healer FA I? I ask this because I seem to recall teaching it once, the same, and being told after the fact that guards don't get things like stitching. Anyone know for sure? And if it /is/ different, can healer apprentices get credit for it? Anyone who actually knows answers to such things, let us know ASAP! ~Aerrin~

Yes, it is different.. It's more like RL FA and does not cover the more medically-inclined info. Actually, it is more like the re-vamped FA for healers class will be. Currently an appie couldn't get credit for it. Once Moe and I re-write the FA classes into FA, General Medical Information and Emergency Medicine they should be able to. That said, we don't currently have a log of the Guard FA class. I know, I have searched. I did take it once upon a long time ago, if that helps. Danna (ever so full of useless information)

Alain pages, "You up for supervising a class, hon?"

Slider> Alain walks in from the Main Hallway.

[Healer Chat] Linnet wiggles and hellos the Nerak. But not the Alain.

You paged Alain with: Nerak pages, "ah, sure dear! hehe... Do you know how to change it for guards?"

[Healer Chat] Alain eyes, "Right. Wanna tell me why she's throwing things at the wall now?"

[Healer Chat] Nerak: hehe, Alain pages, "I think I can figure it out."

[Healer Chat] Nerak: ummm, what's going on?

You paged Alain with: Nerak pages, "ok... where?"

Alain pages, "Trying to decide."

You paged Alain with: Nerak pages, "Might be appropriate to have it in the infirmary?"

Alain pages, "Sure, if you want to come here."

You paged Alain with: Nerak pages, "afterall, the equipment is here. OK."

[Healer Chat] Linnet waves her hand. Can healer-types come too? And eyes Nerak. What' you don't know is that Linnet was already there. ;)

Alain pages, "You can head in or you can send a flit...either."

[Healer Chat] Alain: Sure, healer-types can come, but there will be no credit for this class--it is non-healer first aid.

Nerak is walking towards the infirmary and sees Zenethen in front of her, Afer he asks her how to get to the infirmary, she replies "Ah, well, I was just about to go there... you can follow me. I'm Journeyman Nerak, by the way."

[Healer Chat] Musuko: drat.... Can I get hurt?

[Healer Chat] Alain: No, sorry.

Zenethen nods and smiles.. "I haven't needed to be in this side of the hold before.. " he explains as he follows quietly..

[Healer Chat] Linnet just wants to know ICly which end the themometer goes in. ;)

Alain, Daine, Yuri, Serulia, Kaeii, Sayannah, Trielle, and Yasmine are in the Infirmary.

Nerak busily rushes to the Infirmary.

[OOC:] Alain wows, "I wasn't expecting such a crowd, but am quite pleased to see it. Switching to IC now."

[OOC:] Zavier says "is it too late for me to participate in the class/"

Zenethen wanders in, keeping near the back untill he finds the other guards that he's familiar with..

[OOC:] Alain says "Nope, we're just starting now..." Yasmine has connected.

[OOC:] Zavier says "cool" Kaefe walks in from the Healer Passage.

Ryana limps in, accompanied by the heavy clomp of crutches on the ground as she makes her way in, finding a seat and slipping quietly into her place.

Trielle moves in and stands beside Zenethen, peering at all the faces and mumbling something about excessive noise.

Zavier walks in, grinning around at the crowd. He nods to a few people, then finds a seat.

Nerak walks into the infirmary and looks around at the crowd. She grins over at Alain, who has volunteered to teach this class. "Well, Senior Apprentice Alain, it looks like you have quite a crowd for your class. I'll be here if you need assistance, but I'll leave it up to you for the most part." She winks at the apprentice, walks over and sits on a chair near the cabinet. She keeps a sharp eye on the proceedings.

[NerakChat] Nerak: Hey Aerrin, are you going to be watching the non-healer FA class in the infirmary? I've not supervised a FA class before... could you just keep an eye on it and help me to supervise? I'd appreciate it.

[NerakChat] Aerrin isn't - I'm really distracted, actually.

Serulia smiles slightly at the crowd, glancing at Alain before siting in a chair.

Daine looks up as she's joined by Zenethen and Trielle, nodding in approval at their punctuality. Looks like most of the Guards are here, except for those riding duty elsewhere. Which may or may not be a good thing.

[NerakChat] Nerak: oh, ok. I'm sure I can handle it... I just hadn't done it before.

Zenethen quietly remarks "first victim.." to Trielle, nodding towards Ryana. (Isn't there always someone whispering about somthing in clases?) He does stop after that and watches silantly.

Alain is busy washing his hands when the first few people begin trickling into the infirmary. He proceeds to set some items out on an examination table which is set up in the center of the room, faced by a few rows of chairs for the participants of the class to sit in. Once he's set up, he moves around to lean against the front of the table, nodding to Journeyman Nerak as she comes in and sits. "Thank you, Journeyman. I'll let you know." He straightens up, though, announcing loudly enough for everyone to hear, "Please come on in and take a seat. We'll be starting shortly. There's a hide going around for you to sign so that those of you whose crafts request that you take this class can get credit for it."

[NerakChat] Aerrin nods. You can ask if you have any questions or anything, though

[NerakChat] Nerak: ok.. thanks.

Sayannah makes her way in, swaggering along behind an older-looking girl who bears a strong family resemblance; both sport High Reaches knots. "Have you any idea where we're going?" Sayannah mutters, keeping close to the other girl. "When I said this might be fun, I meant it might be fun to, you know, actually get somewhere ... oh." She blinks as Alain pipes up. "Well, then. I guess you were right." The pair take seats somewhere towards the middle.

Ryana looks up, not hearing Zenethen's comment but seeing his look. She blushes, looking down, and is careful not to look at anyone else until she hears Alain make his announcement.

You paged Alain with: Nerak pages, "do me a favor, add channel nc-NerakChat so we can talk while you're teaching? I won't bug you on the channel, but that way we don't have to page."

[NerakChat] Alain has joined this channel. I don't understand that.

[NerakChat] Alain nods, "Sure--I'm going to start by telling them what first aid is...yadda yadda."

[NerakChat] Nerak: ok... good!

At hearing the announcement, Mayele takes her seat next to a few others she recognizes as healers, and grins at Zavier, obviously in a better mood that her previous days. She takes out a notebook and writing implement, sucking on the end of the nib and tapping it on the book.

Alain clears his throat and calls, "Alright, we're going to get started now. I'm sure you are all aware that this is a basic First Aid class. For starters, I'll define first aid. It is simply medical attention executed by the first person to the scene of an injury. This can encompass a lot of things. Could anyone give me an example of first aid--just go ahead and call it out, you don't have to raise hands."

[NerakChat] Nerak: Good. But first, do the OOC stuff... one pose to them for one pose for you... Just to set the pace.

Zavier grins over at Ryana, eve though he doesn't know her. Coincidentaly, they're sitting next to each other. He sticks out his hand and whispers, "I'm Zavier. Who're you?" he asks kindly.

[Healer] Alain: Mayele, I just wanted to make sure that you knew you weren't going to get credit for this--I'm not teaching full first aid tonight. I didn't want to take up your time if you didn't just want to sit in on it for fun.

Sein waltz in with all the air of a very happy and excited young squirt, her blonde hair wind-blown from the ride over. "Well, hell/oo/ ladies and gentlemen..." Yes, Sein has found her lucky day, and it is smack dab in the middle of all the shuffling of apprentice-feet and such. For Alain's first question, Sein gladly voices her opinion, brightly grinning and all. "Mouth-to-mouth resusitation?" Oo, her favourite.

[Healer] Mayele: I just came for the rp. :D

Daine jumps up at that, in typical trained-to-be-vocal recruit fashion. "Looking after accidental cuts obtained in training, Sir!" And then she looks at the others in the room, blushes and sits down.

Ryana smiles shyly at Zavier, whispering, "Ryana," in response before she turns back to Alain. Her voice is soft, but loud enough to carry as he suggests softly, "Well...if someone's choking, or having trouble breathing."

[OOC:] Alain says "Quick rules, guys--this is nothing as structured as a hatching, but I do ask that you be ICly respectful. Please keep to one pose for each of my poses and, of course, keep everything IC. Otherwise, rock out. ^.^"

[OOC:] Sein says "is Mouth-to-mouth IC?"

[NerakChat] Aerrin: Hey, be sure to log, will you? It'd be nice to have a log for hte page

[OOC:] Alain says "Also, sorry, please don't use OOC if you can help it. If you have an ooc question you can page me. But yes...some mouth-to-mouth is IC. ^.^"

[NerakChat] Alain sure will.

[Healer] Alain nodnods, "You're welcome to stay--I just didn't want there to be a misunderstanding." ^.^

Sayannah calls out, "Mouth to mo ... oh, shardit." Someone beat her. That's no good. "Being able to bandage things?" It always /looked/ like a useful skill to have, at least. "Kayhra," she whines more quietly, poking her companion. "Think of something too. So I can say it. And look smart." Ahem. /Any/ways.

Zenethen looks around, a bit surprised at so many volunteers.. usually its silant and he has to give an answer.. with the current situation, he stays quiet, minding his own buisness now, though that group still streaming through the door is quite distracting..

Trielle stands attentively, her mouth in a thin line. Well, this class is big enough, does she really have to shout out answers? Instead she listens for the answers given by others. After all, if anything is missed, the instructor will fill it in.

[NerakChat] Nerak: is also logging... sorry... talking atm

Kaeii takes his seat as he watches many others calling out answers for the instructor's first question. Being quiet was no problem for him, he's not the type that has much to say. As was now, he's just here as an audience.

Alain's eyes follow the faces of the people who call out answers and he nods some, "Yes, aided breathing can be one...choking, small cuts...those are all true. Nobody mentioned threadscore. Something as simple as pouring water over threadscore to stop the injury from spreading can be first aid. Checking for a pulse is part of first aid. Shock, head injuries, burns, broken bones, bites, and scrapes--treating anything is a form of first aid." The corner of the healer's mouth quirks upwards and he adds, "Even something as simple as kissing a child's bumped head can be looked at as first aid. Something you need to remember, though, is that not all first aid can be executed by all people. The first thing to remember when you go to help a person is that you do -not- want to further agitate any injuries already sustained. Could anyone give me an example of what I mean by that?"

[NerakChat] Alain woos and needs to watch his pose length...

Zavier grins at Ryana. He then turns forward and thinks a bit, then says, "Um, if someone has a cut and you try and fix it, but accidentaly make it bigger?" he tries.

Zenethen feels a bit braver this time and speaks up with "When someone has a broken arm and you try to fix it and dont know how to, then you's make it a lot worse.."

"Uh, if they've got broken bones or somethin, you probably don't want to be movin 'em? Trielle ventures, peering around the room. Well, it was nearly silent.

Sein pauses for a moment, tapping her forefinger against the jut of her chin, her dull grey-green eyes flicking from one corner of the ceiling to the other. Hey... is that a crack? Nah. "Hmm? Oh... maybe you shouldn't be moving people if you don't know what's wrong with them, and just make them as comfortable as possible until a /real/ Healer can be found?" She looks guilty for a moment. Hmm. Was little Sein /sent/ to this class for some reason?

[NerakChat] Nerak: not really... it's a lot of info - they all have had classes or RP's with that long of a pose.

Daine interjects in her naturally loud voice. "Wait, you mean firelizards or other critters can execute" - here she mispronounces that unfamiliar word - "first aid?" Forgive her, she's a little slow at thinking today, and also at controlling those weird questions. Of course, she probably misunderstood the healer's statement.

[NerakChat] Alain: I want to talk about cuts, broken bones, artificial breathing, head and neck injuries, threadscore, puncture wounds...can you think of anything else that is important for them to know? Pressure to stop bleeding will be included in a couple of those...

Ryana shakes her head wordlessly, listening to everyone else answer the question. She either did not see or did not acknowledge Zavier's grin, eyes fixed stubbornly on Alain as she sets the crutches across her lap, trying to make herself more comfortable.

Sayannah contemplates. "That's a harder question." Think-think, goes she, her eyebrows furrowing. "If a person's feeling sick, you don't want to move them too much, or something like that?" It ... kind of makes sense. Maybe.

[NerakChat] Nerak: nope... sounds good to me... I'll keep thinking though. Sorry, was talking to my kids, they're going to bed now, so I can concentrate on this.

Alain nods, "Those are all good answers. Especially yours--" he nods toward Sein. "That's a good--" and he breaks off with a little choke at Daine's question. "Ah, no. I mean that there is certainly some first aid which should only be performed by experienced healers. That ties in with not moving someone until a, quote, "real" healer can be found. It's important to use common sense when you're trying to help someone." He pauses, frowns, and turns to retrieve a notebook from the examination table. "Right, so, I'm going to talk to you about several different possible injuries which -can- be treated by you. The first of those is what we would reffer to as "minor" cuts and abrasions. These are injuries which, though bleeding, have not punctured a main artery. Now, could I get a voluntier, please?"

[NerakChat] Alain: No problem. I can start with what I have and if you think of anything else I can add it in later.

[NerakChat] Nerak: hehe... Ok.

Ryana almost raises her hand, but remembers the crutches and sling at the last minute and shrugs, a little embarrassed. She looks down again, running her hand along the injured arm in a thoughtful, worried gesture, waiting.

[NerakChat] Nerak: you can use me as a 'patient' if you want to.

Trielle steps forward, "I will", she offers. That doesn't seem too difficult of a task. She flashes a grin at her fellow guards, maybe this'll even be fun.

[NerakChat] Alain nodnods, "Okay, Ner, Main arteries are, of course, chest, arms, neck, legs...am I missing anything?"

[NerakChat] Nerak: nope, those are the main ones... doing great so far! hee, this class looks like it'll be fun.

Instinct takes over, and Daine once against jumps up, but sits down at Trielle's offer. She'll have to speak with the Captain about all this jumping-to, really. "Wait, what's a main artery?" is the question offered the air.

Zenethen raises his eyebrows and looks around the class.. He's 31 turns already, a bit older than a good portion of the class. A person his age shouldnt be running arond like kids anymore, though he cant help but to want to be a volunteer. Cautiously he raises his hand, in case there might be a chance he would get pick for once..

Sayannah moves to lift an arm, then pauses, hearing Trielle's offer. She settles back in her seat, awaiting the demonstration and Alain's answer to Daine's question.

Alain nods to Trielle and motions for her to step forward and stand facing the class. "Sorry--I'm probably not going to learn all of your names, but you made a good point, miss," he says, nodding toward Daine. "And that's exactly what I want to show you. Now," he turns toward Trielle, "these are the main points where a major artery is most likely to be severed--please hold out your arms. The first is, of course, in the chest area--" he motions to draw a line where it would effectively divide the girl's body in half. "The second, and these are fairly symmetrical, are in the arms, right along here--" he draws an imaginary line with his finger from the underside of Trielle's bicep, along the inside of her elbow, down to her wrist. The next are along the inside of the legs, down the back of the knee, and to the inside ankle. Can anyone tell me where the final major artery is?"

Zavier raises his hand, but then stops. He had it, really he did. But it's gone now...

Ryana shrugs, asking softly, "The neck, maybe?" She looks at Alain. "I'm not sure, but it seems like it would make sense."

Zenethen nods and asks "In the neck?" Since that seems to be a great place to feel the heart..

Daine guesses. "Um... some seldom-mentioned part of the body?" Or oft-mentioned, depending on whether you come from a hold or a weyr. And she chokes a little on that.

Journeyman Nerak stands quietly in the front corner of the room, watching Alain teaching, and also keeping an eye on the class. She grins as half the class raises their hands or jumps up to volunteer! Healer students are quite wary of being picked to volunteer, so this attitude is quite refreshing. She turns to see that the supplies that will be needed are sitting on the countertop behind her - she is waiting to assist Alain if he needs it, though will definately help him with the equipment. She nods as the students all volunteer answers.

[NerakChat] Nerak: hehe... she's got the groin area! hhe... cute pose.

[NerakChat] Alain: Eh? did I miss something

[NerakChat] Alain: er ?

Trielle coughs, great, now she's standing up here like a perfect fool. Well, she did volunteer for this. At least her uniform looks nice. "I'd have ta say the neck too Senior Apprentice", she's more than a little uncomfortable, but she hides it, her expression blank, "Can I put my arms down now?". /Definitely/ a good idea.

[NerakChat] Nerak: read Daine's pose. 'the seldom mentioned part of the body'.... the groin area, or top of the legs.

Alain nods at Ryana's quick answer in approval, "That's correct. Yes, you can lower your arms. The neck is where we usually check for a pulse -because- it is a major artery--meaning it leads directly to the heart. The body, however, is filled with veins, and therefore can bleed from any laceration, no matter if it is near a major artery or not. Thank you, you can sit down." he adds to Trielle. "If someone has an injury that is bleeding but is not major artery, the first thing to do is clean the wound. There are a couple of different ways you can do this. Water is usually the most readily available, along with soap. But, if it's available, redwort is better to use. This--" he lifts a small jar from the examination table and takes the lid off it, "--is redwort. Please pass it around, but be careful not to get any on you--it -does- smell bad, but it is also a very good cleaning agent." He hands the jar to the nearest person and continues. "After you have flushed the injury with water or redwort, can you tell me what you'd want to do next?"

[NerakChat] Alain ahas and wasn't sure who you were talking about. ^.^'

[NerakChat] Nerak: arteries lead /away/ from the heart.. but that doesn't really matter - veins lead /to/ the heart.

[NerakChat] Alain lols and sorries.

Daine hmms, at that question and offers a quiet - for once - suggestion. "Check to see if it's as bad as it looks, or maybe even worse?"

[NerakChat] Nerak: not a problem... :)

[OOC:] Alain corrects, "According to my dear Journeywoman-assistant, arteries lead -away- from the heart and veins lead -too- the heart--just for those of you who will be in the medical profession..." ^.^'

Zenethen frowns and leans back slightly. "Um.. What is the difference between viens and arteries?" he asks towards Alain, loud enough to be heard decently.. or at least he hopes.. he never had to worry about those things before.

[NerakChat] Nerak: would Alain be embarassed if nerak pitched that info in? or do you want to change it? It probably wont' make a difference to the guards, but if anyone here is in health, it may confuse them.

[NerakChat] Alain: No--go right ahead.

[NerakChat] Alain should have said it's directly -connected- to the heart...

. Trielle strides to the back of the class, resuming her former position. Well, now that the little adventure was over, it wasn't so bad after all. Still listening, she whispers to Zenethen, "Blue arteries, red veins, or, I mean, the other way". Trielle suddenly flushes. Oops, she didn't suppose whispering was the right thing to do. The flush dies down quickly, and she clamps her teeth together.

Zavier shrugs. "Maybe... Bandage it?" He nods self assuredly.

[NerakChat] Alain: Okay, they have mouth-to-mouth, do they have CPR?

[OOC:] Nerak says "yep, Arteries pump oxygenated blood away from the heart, veins bring unoxygenated blood back to the heart, and then to the lungs for an oxygen recharge... just wanted to make sure that was clear."

Ryana shrugs, thinking for a bit. "Well, you'd want to take the person to a healer after you'd cleaned it. If it was bad enough for them to need a healer, anyway." She nods, listening to Zavier. Bandaging would be a good idea, too.

[NerakChat] Nerak: good question... Aerrin? Do they have CPR here??

[NerakChat] Aerrin: Yes

[NerakChat] Alain: good--thought so.

Zenethen frowns and examins his wrist.. "I dont see any differance.." he mumbles, scowlin as he continues stareing at his wrist, hand in the air.

[NerakChat] Nerak: you can 'hear' the blue vein/red artery comment and let them know it's right...

[NerakChat] Nerak: another thing, for minor cuts, they'd want to apply pressure w/just a clean cloth... even before washing it. If it has stuff in it, they might make it worse by trying to remove it - especially impaled objects. Make sure they pack cloths /around/ the object to keep it from moving and making more injuries, then get the person to a healer /quick/ or send a flit for one...

[NerakChat] Alain: does tournequit have an 'e' on the end?

[NerakChat] Nerak: tourniquet

[NerakChat] Nerak: I think...

[NerakChat] Nerak: the 'i' looks better :)

[NerakChat] Nerak: lemme get out my first aide book...

[NerakChat] Alain: found it

[OOC:] Trielle pokes the next poser.

[NerakChat] Nerak: yep, I spelled it right. I have a Red Cross book next to me.

Alain nods a little to each of the answers he hears, and replies, "That's all correct--yours, too--er...girl with the crutch." My, what a nice way to identify her. "The next thing you want to do is, of course, stop the bleeding. Now, if the injury is to an artery, that would be the first thing you'd want to do--an artery leads away from the heart and a vein leads to the heart, by the way, sir. And actually, you're right, arteries to appear blue through the skin and veins do appear as red," he adds toward Zenethen. "The best way to stop bleeding is to apply pressure directly to, or just to the heart-side of the area bleeding. When you apply pressure, always with a clean cloth if one is available, don't pull the cloth off if it becomes saturated with blood. If you remove the cloth you stand the chance of tearing the injury, again. So the best thing to do is to add a clean cloth on top of the cloth that has been saturated. You'll want to continue doing this until blood stops seeping through the cloth and possibly for a little while after. If you can not get the bleeding to stop, an accepted method is to apply a tourniquet, but that should be avoided except by a healer. In the case that a tourniquet is actually needed, find a healer to do so. Once the bleeding has been stopped, keep the wound covered until it can be properly wrapped by a healer. I also need to stress that you should never attempt to use stitches on a person. If impropperly sewed, stitches can tear and cause more trouble for the patient than having to wait a few hours for a healer." He sets his notebook down and looks around, "Sir, would you mind coming up for the next demonstration?" he asks, motioning toward Zenethen.

[NerakChat] Alain sniggers. "Gives me time to start my next pose."

[NerakChat] Nerak: um... arteries appear /red/, veins appear /blue/ sorry to correct you again...

[NerakChat] Alain facedesks. "Er..my arteries appear blue..>"

[OOC:] Alain ahems, "Sorry guys--I'm slaughtering this. Lots to type and all...arteries -do- appear red, and veins -do- appear blue..."

[NerakChat] Nerak: nope... blue means no oxygen... you are seeing your veins...

[NerakChat] Alain is trying to plot his next pose and--I know. ^.^'

Nerak snugs Alain! Alain does the hokey-pokey and he turns himself around. That's what it's all about.

[NerakChat] Nerak: I do want to say that you are doing a great job! Your poses are wonderful.

Zenethen keeps looking at his wrist a few seconds untill he is nudged and realises the Healer was indicateing him. "Wha? Oh! um Yea.." he stutters, standing up straight and making his way to the front of the class. "Um.. Like this?" he asks, spreading arms like Ryana did..

Daine leaves it to anyone else to ask the probing questions, while she sticks to the details. "Sir, when is it safe to remove the cloth or cloths? And how long to you have to wait before you can conclude that you need a tourniquet?" She's been scribbling notes down in a notebook, but doesn't see any mention of that, yet, or maybe she just hasn't been paying too much attention...

Ryana blushes deeper at the identifying feature, nodding slowly as she listens to the answer.

Zavier looks over to Ryana again, giving her a reasuring smile. He then watches Zenethen as he walks up.

Trielle coughs a little, her well manufactured expression turning into puzzlement, "Er, whats a tournik...whatever?". Well, she's understood everything up until now, and she did come here to learn something.

Sayannah goes home.

Alain tries not to smirk, really he does, and shakes his head to Zenethen, "Actually, I need you to lie down on the ground, please." Don't ask if Alain likes guys or girls--you don't want to know. Ahem. "Thank you--" he adds to Daine, "It is safe to remove the cloth once the blood has clotted enough that removing the cloth won't reopen the wound. However, the general rule of thumb you should go by, since you are not healers, is to leave the cloth on until a healer can care for the patient--just to be safe. If you're in a situation where it will be several days before a healer will be able to attend the patient, you will want to go ahead and wrap it with a clean cloth once you are -certain- the wound is no longer bleeding. Of course, be careful not to tie it too tightly or cut off circulation--you should still be able to fit one or two fingers in between the wrapping and the injury."

Daine nods at that, taking down the healer's words for posterity. All the while waiting to see what's going to happen at the next demonstration. "Do we get to try it out?" she muses idly, though it's unclear if she actually spoke out loud.

Zenethen blushes and chuckles as he puts his hands down. "Oh.. ok." As he's getting down on the floor, feeling a lot weirder than just standing there, he asks "Wait.. If you put your fingers under the cloth, wont it hurt the injury?"

Trielle stifles a giggle, glad that Zenethen's the one laying on the floor rather than herself. At least she understands the situation now, and silently chastises herself for her silly question. Patience, after all, would have answered it for her.

[NerakChat] Alain: WHat do they call CPR on pern?

Nerak chuckles as Alain has Zenethen lay down on the floor. She watches the demonstration. She answers Zenethen's question "You put your fingers between the cloth that is on the wound, and the one that is tied around it, keeping the original cloth over the wound..." She turns around and grabs her mug of klah and takes a sip, then returns it to the countertop.

[NerakChat] Aerrin: CPR

[NerakChat] Nerak: yeah, I'd think CPR..

Alain drops to a knee beside Zenethen, "Right, a tourniquet, t-o-u-r-n-i-q-u-e-t for those of you taking notes, is where blood flow is constricted or completely cut off by means of tying off the limb above the artery. However, it is difficult and can cause serious injury if done improperly and, I must stress, should -never- be done by someone who is not a healer." He glances down at Zenethen, "Nice and comfortable, there? The next thing I'm going to show you--" he adds to the class, "--is artificial breathing and CPR. First you check for breathing by putting your hand or your ear to the patient's mouth. If there is no breath and the person is unconscious, feel in their mouth to make sure there's nothing obstructing the air passage. Then, you tilt their head back, like so--" and he proceeds to angle Zenethen's chin up, "--plug their nose--which I won't do because I don't want to suffocate him, and place your mouth over the patients, being sure to completely cover their mouth, and do five breaths, leaving a space between each to take a breath for yourself and allow the person's body to naturally exhale. Then check for breath, again." Lucky for Zenethen, Alain doesn't -actually- give him mouth to mouth... &qquot;Any questions so far?"

[NerakChat] Nerak: chuckles... hmm, I wonder if he's enjoying this? hehe...

Daine shakes her head, still intent on watching, although she is really of the opinion that they have to try it to know what it's like, probably. If only she could do a quick sketch, but her questionable talents do not lie in that direction.

[OOC:] Alain is going to speed up just a little bit here--I don't want to have you all here all night and I still have a couple of topics to cover...don't worry if you don't get a pose in.

[OOC:] Alain says "But if you have a question feel free to ask it."

Linnet draws her knees up and folds her hands across them, resting her chin on top. Yes...she's been here the whole time. She just doesn't see a point in drawing attention to herself. Trust a man to get figure a way to get kissy-face in the middle of a class.

Zenethen raises his eyebrows as the healer describes the demonstration.. he is obviously not quite comfortable with it, though he doesnt move, maintaining that since he is a man, he can handle it. As his head is angled back he nearly panics at the thought of recieveing a 'Kiss of life', though fortunately, it doesn't happen, and unconcious men don't move.

Alain continues, "You continue breathing like that until the person begins to breathe on their own or goes into cardiac arrest--meaning the heart stops beating. In that case, you place your hands over the person's heart--directly between the pectoral, or chest, muscles, one hand flat--like so--and the other hand on top. Keep your arms straight, like so--" and he, of course, proceeds to do so, "--and press downward, compressing the chest cavity approximately two-to-three fingerwidths. Do this ten times and then check for pulse, again. If you're doing this correctly, it -is- possible that you will feel or hearr the patient's ribs crack or break. That is -not- your goal, however, a few cracked ribs are far prefferable to death." He shifts to his feet and holds a hand down to help Zenethen up, "Thank you--you can sit down again. The next topic is broken bones--this includes neck injuries. If possible, you do not want to move a patient who has broken a bone. Sometimes it is necessary to and in that case, you want to stablize the break before moving the person. If this is the neck area, you want to be sure that the head, shoulders and back are all supported when you move them. If, however, it is a limb, you can apply a splint to the area. This is simply done. You find one, prefferably two firm objects such as sicks, and place them on either side of the break. You then proceed to tie off the limb to the top, center and bottom of the supports--being careful to leave room for circulation, while keeping the limb immobile."

[NerakChat] Nerak: I'm impressed w/your poses, Alain... are you doing this out of hte top of your head? Or doyou have something you are working off of?

[NerakChat] Alain lols, "On the fly. I'm a veritable Liberacci when I'm on the spot--actually, I'm surprised how much I remember from HS." ^.^'

[NerakChat] Alain is CPR-certified and all, though... ^.^'

[NerakChat] Nerak: hehe... you are doing a wonderful job! Quite informative and detailed! hehe.

Zenethen nearly giggles with the pushing on his chest, though manages to keep it in, though his grin betrays him. "Thanks, he says as he takes the hand and shies out of the spotlight. That bit of attention should cover for a few more years.

[NerakChat] Alain: Thanks...I'm a little worried that it's too much...but hopefully they'll absorb it.

[NerakChat] Nerak: that is good...and I can tell by the way you are 'demonstrating' it.

[NerakChat] Nerak: hopefully they are logging it as well, and can read it later at their leisure.

[NerakChat] Alain nodnods.

Daine hmphs at that remark about cracked ribs. "What if a rib proceeds to puncture a lung? Or does that happen seldom, if at all?" It's probably about benefits vs. the risk, but still. "Wouldn't boards or planks be better than sticks? Less vertical movement or whatever, after all."

[NerakChat] Nerak: Hey, with the splinting, you may want to mention about immobilizing the joints above and below the break just in case.

[NerakChat] Nerak: to avoid movement in the area, I mean...

Trielle nearly boggles at Daine, sheesh, this girl was sharp. Trielle merely nods, while lifting her right eyebrow in a questioning manner, ascertaining that she'd also like the answers the Daine's inquires.

[Healer] Sudanna: Alain, Daine /does/ realize this is emergency stuff, right? ,, hee

[NerakChat] Nerak: yeah... What Sudanna said! hehe...

Alain takes a deep breath, reaching for his notebook, again, and perusing it before setting it aside once more. "You shouldn't be pushing hard enough to puncture a lung--you only need to compress the breastbone about this much--" he holds up his hands to show about two inches of space between them. "You are right, boards or planks would be best, but it's not very likely that you'll have wood available to you, so do your best--you also want to make sure that you stablize any joints near the break that could worsen the break. That would be the elbow or shoulder or wrist on the arm, the knee or hip on the leg...ankle if necessary. Now, the next thing, and I mentioned it before, is threadscore. Threadscore occurs most commonly to dragonriders and ground-crews. First thing I want to stress, and this is -very- important, is -never-, never-never-/ever/ pour agenothree on a person. Yes, it kills thread, but it is also -very- toxic and acidic and you can cause irreparable injury to a person by using it on them. If you're a member of a ground-crew, there should always be water readily available in case of threadscore. Water, of course, kills thread, but it also can help flush out the wounded area to prevent infection. It is imperative that, once the thread has been disparraged, the wound is flushed with water and redwort. Threadscore is particularly succeptable to infection, as it is a burn. So it should be treated the same way as with a burn. Do -not- put numbweed on a burn of -any- tyype until it has been thoroughly disinfected with redwort--and even then sometimes it isn't safe to apply numbweed directly to the burn area. Beyond water and redwort, you should never have need to care for a burn. It should always be attended to by a healer. Any questions to now?"

[NerakChat] Alain nods and mentioned--

[OOC:] Zavier waves to all, and must go!

[OOC:] Alain says "Of course, ICly, wood isn't very common--especially in the kind of emergency situation that we're talking about. Thanks for coming Zavier--you can @send me for a log if you need."

Daine considers the last statement. "Freshwater or seawater, or does it make a difference?" She's referring to the thread-killing, of course. "I suppose seawater might not be as clean... but isn't it supposed to help healing?"

Zenethen nods in agreement, not having much thought about it, since he avoids going outside furing threadfall.

Ryana raises her good hand hesitantly, asking softly, "Saltwater would hurt an open wound, wouldn't it?"

[OOC:] Daine gotta scoot, too. Lecture. Thanks, Alain.

Alain replies, "Yes, it does make a difference. -Always- flush a wound with fresh, clean water. It is best if it has been disinfected by boiling, and then cooled, but if that's not possible, you'll just use the cleanest fresh water you can find." He takes a deep breath and continues, "Okay, the final topic is punctures. This can be anything from a needle to a dagger wound to an animal bite. Puncture wounds are also extremely succeptible to infection, so the first thing you want to do, if possible, is make sure that there is nothing in the wound that may infect it. There is one exception to this rule, that being a stab wound--this can be from a dagger, from a sharp piece or metal or wood. In that case, you'd want to leave the object -in- the wound until a healer can tend it. The reason for this is that the object can help keep the wound from bleeding profusely--it acts as a natural clotter. In the case of smaller punctures, you would first make sure that the wound is free of infectious objects, and then follow the proceedure for a cut--that being cleaning and stopping the bleeding." He reaches for his notebook again and glances over it, "Ah...I think that's about everything. Does anyone have any questions? Of course, I need to stress again that this is basic first aid. Don't try and be heroes. If there's a healer readily available, always let the healer do his or her job. They're trained for it. Only treat a patient if there is no healer available or if the person's life will depend on your doing so."

[NerakChat] Alain: Anything else I should add?

[NerakChat] Nerak: nothing I can think of... I think you covered it /very/ well!

[Healer] Sudanna visualises Zenethen's next RP.. *shudder*

Ryana smiles, nodding. She gathers her crutches up, not standing yet but preparing to do so. "Thank you, Senior Apprentice."

Daine shakes her head, and nods in thanks to Alain. "Thanks for the heads up, sir." Her notebook remains open, though, in case there's anymore to come, and a glance is given to her fellow guards to check how they're doing.

[Healer] Alain falls over laughing.

[Healer] Hytiaf: Oh? *isn't watching* I don't understand that.

[Healer] Nerak: LOL!!!

[Healer] Sudanna: I was the one who had to tell him he had to retcon falling from the dragon heights and surviving.

Zenethen raises his hand out of habit. "If the puncture is small enough, could you just pull it out and hold a finger on it till it stops?" reasonable question, since thats what he's done all his life with the millions of slivers he's gotten.

Trielle shakes her head, "Thank ya much, Senior Apprentice Alain, for the lesson", she continues, "I don't have any other questions". Trielle notes Daine looking at her out of the corner of her eye, and then turns her attention to Zenethen. Well, thats what she's always resorted to doing anyway, there had never been any healers around.

Alain nods to Zenethen, "Of course that is an option...particularly if it's a splinter or something like that--The rule for leaving an object in a stab wound is if removing the object with increase blood flow, you should leave it in. If you want a more specific size, I would say if it's less than a fingerwidth, it is probably safe to remove it. Of course, use common sense." He glances around, "If there are no more questions, you're dismissed. Thank you all for attending, I'll let your craft or superior know that you attended. If you have any more questions for me, please feel free to stay and ask them."

[NerakChat] Alain: Is it a bad idea to tell him to use common sense? ^.^'

[NerakChat] Nerak: yep... if it's in more than an inch... leave it in.

[NerakChat] Alain woo-woos and is da sheeyit.

[NerakChat] Aerrin: Stick in a short OOC section

[NerakChat] Alain: OOC?

[NerakChat] Nerak: hmmm, don't know... don't know whether or not he has any! hehe

[NerakChat] Aerrin: In which you can remind them of such things as common sense, that paging or @sending a healer for info on how bad something can be is nice, ect.

[NerakChat] Nerak: oh yeah... very good! I didn't think of that.

Zenethen raises his eyebrows in understanding at the size indicated.. a bit larger than he though.. "heh, ok.. thanks." he nods and turs towards Trielle, who he had noticed is paying quite a bit attention to him. "Heya.." he says.

[NerakChat] Aerrin: Y'know. Just a brief 'getting injured ettiquette' kind of thing. Then you can tell him to use common sense. ;)

[OOC:] Alain says "Also, if you ever are RPing and have a question, feel free to page or @send a healer."

[NerakChat] Aerrin: We do it in HB, but it would probably work here, too

[OOC:] Trielle says ";p"

[OOC:] Alain says "And, of course, if you're RPing an injury, always page a healer to request permission before getting them involved. This seminar is not intended for use IRL, etc. etc. If you or someone you know is seriously injured, always call 911 before trying to help the person...etc. etc...Harper's Tale is not responsible for the safety of it's players...yadda yadda..."

[OOC:] Ryana says "thank you, Alain!"

[OOC:] Trielle says "haha"

Willow applauds Alain Alain OOCly takes a bow...

[OOC:] Nerak says "Please remember that if you are going to have an injury RP, make sure that you page a healer /before/ it happens. It's kind of hard for us to stop what we're doing when someone accidently cuts off their leg and needs a healer! (that actually happened to me... a person paged me and said they had just about cut their arm off...)"

Nerak hugs Alain! Alain snuggles Nerak back

Willow applauded OOCly, of course.

Alain chuckles OOCly, too, then. ^.^'

[OOC:] Nerak says "would like to see Willow applaud! What a talented Firelizard! hehe."

[OOC:] Zenethen says "should there be a preprinted disclaimer for all lessons taught icly?"

Trielle nods to Zenethen, "Welllll, should be getting back I guess...", she cuts off, shrugging.

Willow oocly says "No, it's really not necessary."

[OOC:] Ryana shrugs. "I think this worked just fine without one."

[OOC:] Trielle says "Er, yeah. ;p"

[OOC:] Zenethen chuckles.. there could be a missconception though... (couldnt see it accually happening within reason.. just having fun)
