This plant is a perennial sunflower, usually grown as an annual. It is fast growing, yet somewhat coarse with green hairy leaves that extend 4-6 feet tall rapidly. Spectacular flowers that bloom late summer to mid fall, yellow centered with crimson to orange rays. The width can be up to 12 inches. Can be used as a temporary screen or in a childs garden. Smaller varieties have been developed. The stems are hollow and must be cut carefull to avoid bending the stems. Seed can be sown directly. Light sun to full sun, water semi arid to moist. It prefers mostly sand and lay loam for soil.  Drought tolerant, withstands against heat and humidity. Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies
