Firebush
Hamelia Patens Jacquin
Rubiaceae
Firebush gets its name from the blossoms it dons, each 1-2 cm long and bright red in color. This tropical shrub may have either opposite or whorled leaves. The fire lobed flowers are followed by dark red berries.

Native to Florida, this plant is partial to warmer climates, such as the tropics, therefore it may be harder to cultivate in cooler climates. It blooms all year round.

Firebush frequents hammocks, coastal dunes and shell middens. Because of this, it grows best in sand, not soil with full sun and moderate water.
