The general term used to describe the biological enhancement of living beings through the use of nanites to retroactively alter their genetic sequences. The surgical processes and implants that are the core of a bionetic system were developed by Dr. Reginald Quack in 3192 AD as an alternative to crude cybernetic systems such as head computers and artificial eyes.
The initial stage of bionetic enhancement is the insertion of a nanite distributor at the base of the subject's brain stem. Once activated, the implant will produce several nanites - nanoscopically small robots comprised of chemically programmed molecules - and release them into the host's body. The nanites, following the programming that the doctors have put into the distributor, make their way to the eyes, abdomen, brain, or wherever else they are told to go and begin to resequence the host's RNA and DNA until they achieve the desired result. Though there is generally not an immediate change, the long term benifits are well worth the wait. Any new program that the subject wishes to use can be easily downloaded directly into the implant at a later date.
Common uses of bionetic technology include curing blindness, fixing chemical imbalances in the brain, enhancing memory recall, and speeding up reaction time of the subject's reflexes.
This is not to say, however, that bionetics are in common usage. Many Mobians only receive the treatments when necessary or when their jobs require it. Often, the only bionetic implant that any Mobian takes is the Common Mobian language cell, but even this trend is expected to taper off as each sucessive generation grows up speaking Common. Mobians don't consider this kind of enhancement taboo by any means; most simply prefer living their lives as naturally as possible.
