One day when Usagi was rushing to school hoping she wouldn't be late again, she saw some boys hurting a little black cat, she came to the cats rescue, and noticed that it had bandages on its forehead. Usagi removed the bandages to reveal a strange marking resembling a cresent moon, then she ran off realizing that she was going to be late for school. Later that day, Usagi got a test back with a big red 30 written on it. She was in a really bad mood and Melvin didn't help, he was upset because he only got a 95 ande his parents would be upset. As Usagi was walking home she crumpled up the test and tossed it, but it hit Mamoru on the head and he looked at it and laughed,"A 30!? Are you stupid or just incredibily lazy?" When Usagi finally got home and showed her mother the test, she got very mad and told Usagi to stay outside. Later on, Usagi was in her room sleeping when the little black cat went into Usagi's room through the window. Usagi was surprised when the cat spoke to her. Usagi decided that it was a dream and tried to go back to sleep while the cat introduced herself as Luna and explained to her that her best friend Molly was being attacked by a youma. Luna gave Usagi a brooch. Usagi accepted it, with the instruction from Luna that for Usagi to say the phrase,"Moon Prism Power, Make-Up!" this made her the fighter for love and justice, Sailor Moon.
Usagi does not have many qualities that make for a super heroine. Being Sailor Moon is more of a growing experience for her (after all, it's the only thing that she gets better at in the series). She's earned a nickname which she dislikes (odango atama/dumpling head"), which comes from her distinctive hair style.
