Different Ways to Read the Neopian Times

by Sarakrindel

Many may think the only way to read the Neopian Times is to get on the internet and go through all the links/bookmarks/memorized-urls to get to where you want and sit down and read. WRONG!!!

Okay, you do need to start out on the page where you have the story/article/comic you want to read. But you don't have to sit there with your modem (I'm assuming you do not have DSL or Cable which is always online) hooked up all of the time while you read.

Frequently what I do is print the story as a postscript (.ps) file. To do this in most browsers, you go to "Print", but instead of going to Print - lpr, do File - thefilenameyouwant.ps. Now it's in your files, and you may shut down your internet connection if you want (in fact you could do that before, but if something happened to your browser window it would be lost until the next time you went online). This will capture EVERYTHING on the page - even images.

Before you print postscript files, make sure what/if you have a postscript viewer. Under Linux, my viewer of choice is GhostViewer (GV). Probably Windows and Macs come with their own postscript viewers as well. My recommendation, whatever your viewer, is to find out the hotkeys for your program (a hotkey is something you press on the keyboard as opposed to dragging your mouse around). It makes viewing a lot easier.

However, there are disadvantages to Postscript. The biggest one is that you still have to sit at your computer all of the time to read what you want. Sure you can print it and take it to your bed (my personal favorite place to read) or if you're on the go, but keep in mind that the font is fairly large in the NT, and Postscript takes it exactly as on the page.

A solution, if you want to print, is instead of converting to postscript, copy and paste the text into your word processor. Then you can alter the font size so that when you print it will take less ink, paper, and, my biggest issue, less time! If you're very nature friendly, and you know how, print double-sided. This will not work for comics, but it will for everything else!

But be choosy in what you decide to print. I only try to print stuff which I think will be better-than-average. And ALWAYS STAPLE WHAT YOU PRINT! If you print to much and let it go loose all over the place, then your house will become a paper dump (trust me, I learned the hard way). If you don't think you will use what you printed anymore, recycle.

Well, that's pretty much what I have to say, and I hope this will help you have a happier time reading the Neopian Times :)
