A Day in the Life of a City Dog

by Theswimmingwriter

Hi, my name is Whispering Jesse, but everyone calls me Jesse. I'm a 3 year old miniature schnauzer who lives in New York City on what the humans call 5th Avenue. I usually have very interesting days in New York. I'll tell you about one of my typical days when nothing interesting happened.

Everyday I wake up at 5:00 am sharp and wake up my owner, Melissa Smith. She is a screenwriter and heads some production company called Scout Productions. I think that she named it after a dog she had before me.

Anyway, I woke her up and she said, as always, "Why so early, boy?" and got up. She took a shower, got dressed, and made breakfast. She made me my usual Beneful with three soft, meaty Friskies Beef and Bacon burgers on top and put it in my ceramic bowl with paw prints on it. Melissa also put my regular nice warm milk in the bowl identical to my food bowl. After that, she had her breakfast of her customary bagel sandwich with smoked salmon, purple onions, cream cheese, tomatoes, and a few capers. It always smells absolutely disgusting to me.

Then, after breakfast, when she finished, she exclaimed, "I finished first!" in her common bragging tone that she always uses for that one sentence. She then put the scarps of my food in my portable bowls and put them in my dog backpack, or what she calls my "puppy-pack". After that, she fixed her hair and put my blue bandanna that reads 'Jesse' on my neck. She then put on her black, leather jacket and put my leash on me. After that, she slung her backpack over her back and put my "puppy-pack" on me. We were ready to go.

We exited our beautiful, dog oriented apartment and went on to Central Park, to Melissa's favorite writing bench. As we go on, we passed the Disney Store. They don't allow dogs, but sometimes during the walk to the park, I saw kids walking out of the store hugging dogs and other strange looking animals. They obviously don't follow the rules. It was strange, since the dogs were stiff and stayed in one position. Anyway, I stuck up my nose at them and went on.

Soon we got to the park. We went over to our familiar bench deep in the heart of the park. Melissa got out her laptop and started writing while I ate the rest of my breakfast. After I finished my breakfast, Melissa was still writing, so I looked in my bag and came upon an old- but useful- bone in my backpack and chewed it until Melissa stopped and said, "Let's get lunch." We packed up and started off to Caf Nosidam on Madison Avenue.

On our way to Caf Nosidam, I noticed kids exiting a large store also hugging dogs. I knew that that particular store, F.A.O. Schwartz, didn't allow dogs. Unlike the ones in the arms of children exiting the Disney Store, these looked more lifelike. I barked at them, except none barked back. Maybe the taxis made to much noise.

When we got to Caf Nosidam, we sat at our usual outdoor table and Melissa ordered her regular pepperoni pizza slice and ordered some pepperoni and sausage slices and warm milk for me. We ate our delicious meals, as Melissa talked about the movie she was writing. When we finished, after collecting the bill, our familiar waiter, Sam, patted me on the head before we left. I barked a good bye and we went on.

We started heading towards Fifth Avenue, and I almost started home without Melissa, who stopped me and said that we needed to do a little birthday shopping before we went home. We first headed over to Tiffany and Co., where they except dogs on leashes. I'm always surprised when I go there, because considering what they sell, fine jewelry, they really shouldn't allow dogs.

When we got in, Melissa started over to where they sell those charm bracelets. I don't see why humans call them that, since they really don't charm anyone. After Melissa bought a friend a bracelet and herself a collar, or what humans call them, a necklace, we went over to the pet section, where collars and bowls were sold. They were very nice, but Melissa dragged me away before I could bark and ask for one.

Next, we went over to Saks Fifth Avenue to buy Melissa's aunt a present. In the store, we went over to where they sell women's clothing. As Melissa picked the outfit and looked for the size, I looked around and wondered why humans wore clothes.

After that, Melissa picked out the outfit and paid for it and we started towards Madison Avenue. I always remember that street for the Three-Dog Bakery Boutique, but I knew we weren't going there. I thought that we were going to Banana Republic, but instead we were heading towards the Three - Dog Bakery Boutique!

In the boutique, Melissa said "Jesse, since you've been such a good sport, I'll let you pick out a new toy," and with that let me off my leash. I raced all around the store, trying out beds and toys, and trying on collars, coats, hats, and leashes. I finally, after about a half-hour of looking around, settled on a Frisbee. Melissa, after paying then said, "Let's try out that Frisbee," and we started over to Central Park.

In Central Park, instead of going to the bench, we went to Dog Hill, where all of the local dogs meet and play. At the hill, I checked out some dogs, including a German shepherd I had met the week before. The shepherd, named Dizz, and I played Frisbee with Melissa and his owner, Mart, in a dog run, where we can go off leash. We played for what seemed like hours, and Dizz even showed me how to jump up and catch the Frisbee and I actually caught it once or twice! We played until Melissa said "Time to go, Jesse." I said good bye to Dizz and we went on to dinner at Nello.

At Nello on Madison Avenue, Melissa had some spaghetti with meatballs, (in my opinion, worms) while I had some warm milk, meatballs, and pepperoni. When Melissa finished, I wasn't quite done so we put the rest in my portable bowls, paid the bill, and left for home on Fifth Avenue.

We finally got home after along day. Melissa changed into her pajamas and took off my bandanna. We watched the movie "Homeward Bound- Lost in San Francisco". I watched from my comfortable pillow on the floor while finishing dinner and Melissa watched from the couch, eating popcorn.

After the movie, Melissa got into her bed and I got into mine.

That is one of my normal days, and I can only guess how much fun and exciting tomorrow will be! This is Whispering Jesse saying see-ya!
