Trevor Brazile and Cody Ohl are among 23 world champions who advanced to next month's ProRodeo Tour Championship Finale in Dallas.

The rodeo, which is scheduled Nov. 10-12 at the American Airlines Center in conjunction with the Texas Stampede, will feature the top 12 in each event from the Wrangler ProRodeo Winter Tour and Summer Tour. The field was named after the Summer Tour finale Saturday in Omaha, Neb.

The Championship Finale is the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association's last, high-paying, regular-season show. An event winner can earn around $15,000 or $20,000, a check that can make a big difference in qualifying for December's National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas or winning a world title.

Brazile, a Decatur resident, will attempt to bolster his commanding lead in the race for the world all-around title. After earning $1,294 at Omaha, Brazile leads Ryan Jarrett in the world race by $122,882.

Ohl, a Hico cowboy, earned $10,350 in tie-down roping at Omaha. He leads Brazile in the tie-down world race by $22,400.

Mesquite rodeo successful

After 49 seasons, the Mesquite Championship Rodeo still ropes in fans.

When the world's most famous weekly rodeo concluded its 2006 season Saturday, about 161,000 fans had attended performances over the past six months at the Resistol Arena. That's up 10,000 from 2005, said general manager Mark Miller.

A year ago, Miller said the rodeo attendance had increased 11,000 from 2004.

"It's good, wholesome family entertainment," Miller said. "I think there's a little bit more disposable income out there among families, and we remain affordable. We have promotions such as buy one, get one free coupons on tickets. We also make ways for kids to participate in the rodeo with events such as the calf scramble and mutton busting."

Miller said the rodeo, which runs Friday and Saturday from April through September, has worked on appealing to a new generation of fans.

"We've done little things such as putting in a new sound system, and we've gone to rock and roll music with the bull riding," Miller said. "You just have to play to that younger [demographic]."

PBR update

Defending world champion Justin McBride became the Professional Bull Riders' second competitor to earn more than $3 million.

The Oklahoman reached the milestone after earning $34,470 when he won last weekend's tour stop in Reading, Pa. The PBR's other $3 million cowboy is Chris Shivers.

Talented announcers

Bob Tallman of Weatherford has been chosen as a co-announcer for the 2006 National Finals Rodeo. It will be a record 20th appearance.

Charlie Throckmorton of Grandview will be a co-announcer for next month's National Finals Steer Roping in Hobbs, N.M.

Rookie's rodeo glory
Tuesday, 3 October 2006

THE 27th Country Energy Australasian Kundabung Rodeo lived up to all expectations and delivered an action-packed day of entertainment.

The best cowboys in the world, wildest horses and the meanest bulls in the rodeo's history entertained a crowd of more than 6000.

The Kundabung Rodeo has become Australia's premier rodeo and each year John Scott and his team of dedicated workers make it bigger and better than the previous year.

Aldavilla cowboy Denny Farley was aiming to make it three Australasian titles in row, a feat never accomplished before, but it wasn't meant to be.

The spot-light was on up and coming bullrider Josh Burke, who was recently crowned the Australian Rookie Bullrider of the year.

At the ripe age of 16, Josh was the second rider to come out of the gates during the qualifying rounds and had 6000 captivated with his skill and determination.

In the small space of eight seconds, the young man from Armidale way had the ride of his life and impressed the judges who gave him a score of 79 points.

Josh's time in the spotlight was not about to end any time soon, and he went through to win the title, being one of the youngest bullriders to win the illustrious title.

Ben Jones from Singleton and Andrew J Kelly had to settle for second and third places respectively.

Another Armidale lad, Denny Swanlea won the saddle bronc. He beat off last year's winner Kevin Cooper from Gosford, who finished in second place. Michael Murray from Wingham took out third place.

Katherine Harris from Riding for the Disabled had her own cheer squad and you could hear them loud and clear when she won the ladies barrel race.

The novice bull ride was won by Sam Rice from Armidale. Second place went to New Zealander Blake Pine, with Denny Glass-Callus finishing third.

John Scott was extremely pleased with this year's event.

"We were blessed with great weather, great crowds, and a great show of cowboys talent, what more could you ask for," he said.

"The day could not have gone better without the support of our major sponsors and incredible show of enthusiasm from the competitors and energetic crowd.

"Riders came from all across Australia and we also had cowboys come from New Zealand to compete in the International Trans-Tasman challenge."

And Australians can hang their head high as the Australians won the challenge by two points.

Spectators were also entrained by comical acts in the arena, it was the most comedy ever seen at a rodeo in Australia. Animal trainer extraordinaire Ian Bostock always produces a giggle and chuckle from people and this year's rodeo was no different.
